Andover Need Blind

Did they put that in writing, or was it a verbal promise?

It was in writing.

I don’t remember what it said in writing and I’m to lazy to go to the basement and dig out the papers. However, our understanding from PA was essentially the stated policy - that the aid would continue at a comparable level as long as our financial circumstances didn’t change (positively or negatively). They didn’t and the subsequent award was commensurate with our expectations.

BTW: I believe the assignment of aid from a named scholarship pool is common. My daughter was asked to write a letter to the generous family that endowed her scholarship (and that of many others I’m sure). However, the grant was still need based. I know there is always some flexibility regarding the analysis of each family’s unique circumstances - hence I’m not surprised that they might top an award from another school for a student they really want. I don’t know whether they give grants that are outright unrelated to need, but I believe their public position is that they do not.

I have been told by the FA director of a day school that unless you win a lotter (or something to that effect) your aid should be continuing at a comparable level for the duration of your years at the school. It doesn’t do the school good either if you have to withdraw because of the discontinuation of aid after you’ve been there for 1 or 2 years. They essentially invested in your a couple of years for nothing when you leave without graduation and unsatisfied. I don’t know if that’s still true though in this economy.
