Andover Pg Year

I currently attend a boarding school in Concord, New Hampshire. I will be graduating with the class of 2012. I am young for my grade so I would like to take a PG year, preferably at Andover. I was just wondering about my chances for admission. I have talked to some people who say that because I already go to a prep-school that my chances are lower since PG programs are aimed at students who need an 'adjustment' year before entering college from public schools. Could anyone comment on this? Thank you.

I recommend you speak with the college counseling office at your school. They can advise you about the different paths you can take after senior year. I would not put much faith in the advice of random people. The private school world is very, very small. Your counselor will know how to gauge your chances. He or she might have some good ideas about bridging the gap between high school and college. You might decide to take a gap year instead of a PG year.

I completely disagree. The advice of random people is wonderful, since much is self-selected advice from people with good intentions, whereas the advice from college counseling (I have found) is often mixed and unreliable. Phrased simply: who would better answer the question of whether newportcrown should apply as a PG at Andover, a college counselor or an Andover alumnus?

That said, unfortunately, I think it’s very difficult to get into Andover as a PG unless you’re an athlete or mathlete (like Thai scholar-level). I didn’t see a lot of PGs at Andover who did not fall into one of those two categories during my years there.
