Andover Senior Taking Questions

probably not, because there is no A or B, its neither, it a 5, some might though if you really wanted to know. Though some teachers input it into the grade book as a 1-100, its kinda weird and slightly archaic, but it is kinda nice.

What numbers do ivy leagues want to see when youre a junior?

The only thing I would add to the grading scale is that some teachers change the scale if it's a difficult class or use a curve. If you have no hooks, the ivies probably want at least a 5.5 along with good ECs and leadership. Honestly, it's very hard to tell even with Naviance because you have no idea who has hooks or not.

plenty get in with 5.0's and some with 4.5's

The ones I know who got in with those grades were legacies, athletes, or URMs though. If you don't have a hook, you need amazing grades.

whats the worst thing about Andover?

it really depends on what level classes your taking, in standard classes you need pretty good grades, the higher level classes the more margin for error you have.

The worst thing: some people get very stressed out some people decide to get very little sleep.

Hi, I just got accepted into Andover's class of '13.

Attending a prestigious private high school, how much competitiveness do you feel on a day to day basis, and when are the most competitive times of the year?

I thought Andover was pretty laid back most of the time. Upper year and senior fall got pretty stressful. I wouldn't exactly say that kids were competitive. as in competing against each other. It was more kids freaking out about college combined with a heavy workload.

I think sugerkim really nailed it with her last comment. I never felt pressured by my classmates to share my grades or to match their performances. I put most of the stress on myself and occasionally felt overwhelmed by the workload.

The whole hook thing is also right on; it's nearly impossible to interpret the scattergrams. I feel like anything above a 4.5 gives you at least a chance at most schools depending on what else you bring to the table. However, in order to really confident about the Ivys, I think you'd need at least a 5.5. This sounds cliche, but you really need to not worry about the scattergrams, not worry about the class profile/how other people are doing, and just put the effort into your classes. College Counseling provides pretty good advice and will let you know where you stand.

But is the workload significantly larger at andover and exeter? And do the people that are stressed out like living there regardless?

Do you have time to have a social life?
It just seems that everyone is so committed to academics, clubs, sports and saving the world, is there any time to have a regular high school experience and date and stuff?

that's another concern...how much fun do you have at andover? is there time to party? how are the girls?

Well, from what I hear you have time to socialize... The girls (at least in the pics on the website) are better than the ones in Exeter. Though if you go to it based on how hot girls are, it's a fail reason.

..I'm a girl at Andover. And now I feel awkward.

You'll definitely have time to socialize, though. It's all about time management.

Best thing I've heard all day.

Don't feel awkward, it's us nerdy boys (I am sexy, though) joking around.

I think it's impossible for anyone here to say whether the workload is larger at Andover or Exeter. I know only one person who has gone to both. It really depends on your individual course load and teachers.

I found ways to have fun in the stress. Pulling an all nighter with a couple friends was actually kinda fun. Obviously not everyone likes it, but the majority do. You find ways to deal with the stress. After a while you don't even notice it unless a big paper or finals come around.

Yes, I had plenty of time to have a social life. For the most part these are normal high schoolers. It's just a matter of balancing social time with school work. These boards make it sound like everyone studies all the time, and that is definitely not the case. Kids like to brag about how much work they have, but they also brag about how much fun they had too.

very insightful. I mean like honestly i just wanna go to boarding school for three reasons: To get the best education i can, whichll get me into the best college i can, and to have fun.
Isnt that what everyone wants?

How well are day students accepted by the boarders at Andover?

Any tips on how best to experience my shadow day at Andover?
