Beware of ChaosTheory, Jonathan. :)

I was thinking of him while I was typing that post, lol.

I must say, the word "Andover" does seem to sound slightly nicer than the word "Exeter". And being close to Boston is neat.

It's funny that you bring up the sounds of the names Jonathan. My English teacher last year compared them (he lives at Exeter, but teaches at Andover). We had a class all about the sounds of words and names. He said that Andover sounded like leisure, flowing, happiness, while Exeter sounded like violence and bloodshed.

Do not incur my wrath!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Jonathan. Do not. :)

I must say, however, that the first thing I noticed about "Exeter" is the way it sounds - infinitely better than "Andover". Exeter is sharp, keen; it demands attention. Andover, on the other hand, is like an apple. :p

Oranges4ever. \,\,\,\ ^;,,,,;^ \,\,\,

lmao.. .

hee hee wow
we should have a thread where ppl vote whether they like Andover better or Exeter better.

both names sounds awesome btw
but andover does sound more leisurely
exeter sounds more sharp and keen

i guess they are both good in their own ways

"violence and bloodshed"

They're both stellar institutions, BUT considering Andover accepted our current president, my vote is for Exeter! ;)

There is a train severl blocks from the Exeter campus that take syou right into boston so proximity should not matter that much.

It's funny everyone how everyone typecasts Andover as the 'humanities' school of the pair when our top three departments are probably: Physics, Music, and Computer Science, in that order.

Oh, and there was an interesting article in the New York Times about us...they called up our Dean of Studies, Tempa Maqubela, and asked him what our hardest course was: he said Physics 580 because he thought Organic Chemistry would be too pretentious.

quote from oblivia567: Chao, your username is like Chaos'. He also wants to go to Exeter. He's obsessed, actually.

not only username la, but also first name.
and also not similar to Chaos in meaning if you get to know Mandarin a little bit. Actually you know I was almost wavered my favor to Andover cuz I was really flattered by my interviewer's kind words. hopefully exeter will find me an alumnus soon to firm up my passion for "orange" :-)

p.s. i'm also obsessed to orange, mandarin orange precisely. Apple is difficult for my braced teeth :D

I think the idea that Andover is humanities/social-science-oriented developed because Exeter has such a strong math program. I believe the humanities (esp. English) were awesome at Exeter, though, mostly due to the Harkness method. During re-visits, I found the Exeter discussion to be much more dynamic than that at Andover.

Andover and Exeter are very similar on the surface. My S was accepted to both and choose Andover. As a parent I was a bit biased towards Andover because every corner we turned in the middle sized southern city we live someone from Phillips was there like a supportive friend.
Oddly Exeter alums were disconnected or showed little interest . I'm sure some could tell the same story about Phillips. The whole experience just painted a picture of modern Exonians as disconnected. I would not paint the gentlemen from the 1960's and earlier with this brush.

The big surprise about Andover was the Boston area influence.A large percentage of the school is Boston area kids. Also I feel that this large local population along with a big NYC influence gives the campus the edge of a large regional high school or small college.
Finally, the older and more rounded the kid , the more Andover may appeal to them. It's Hyper High School. My S has loved it.

personally, i think the decision will be made for me. i'll go to whoever admits me/gives me bigger scholarship, end of story.

Nellyrae... right on. At this point, I'm not sure which school is going to accept me and give me FA. I know which schools I like better, but there's no way I'm picking them this early, for all I know, I might only get into my least favorite school. If you decide this early, the rejection letters might take a bigger hit on you, especially if you got into you last choice.

Don't you guys miss your family's. Jeez I couldn't leave my mom for like a week. She's my best friend and I think I would come home crying in five minutes. I guess I'm weird.

herculez, i've tried to tell myself that i'm not going in, taht way i won't be dissapointed, but i just can't. i want to get in so badly and my hopes are so high i don't think there's anything i can tell myself to make the blwo less bad.

I agree with you, i know my favorite schools. But if i got into my least favorite with enough FA, why, i'd be tickled pink (love that syaing, LOL) I would be absolutely thrilled to go to any of these schools i'm applying to. I'd be jumping up and down and probably peeeing myself from excitemnet. (JK!)

All i need is one big packet with a nice big FA offer and i'm happy! LOL>

Leahog, out of curiosty, why are you on a site discussing boarding schools if have absolutely no interest in them? LOL. bs isn't for everyone.

NeLLyRaE and iHerculez, you may be (good luck and I hope you are) pleasantly surprised by the choices you find yourself having to make after March 10. My D applied to both Andover and Exeter last year and is now attending Andover (and absolutely loving it). Neither she nor her mother and I thought there was the slightest chance either school would give her enough FA to make it possible for her to attend. But they both did, and were happy to compete with each other to give her even more when we asked for it because of special considerations. In the end she just had to choose, but it was a very difficult decision for her because she absolutely loved both schools.

I'm applying to both and several others (Choate, Hotchkiss, St. Paul's, Loomis), but I find myself leaning a bit more towards Exeter. Although that may have something to do with the fact that my cousin is a senior there. :)
