andover or exeter?

hey if you got into both andover and exeter? which school would you choose and why?

They are both GREAT schools! They are very similar in many ways. Andover's campus seemed larger, since it includes what used to be the Abbot Academy for girls. I personally thought Exeter's facilities were a little nicer. Their science center was just a tad better ( the labs I saw, had laptops on pullouts under the lab tables!). The new student center was awesome. They also have minor differences in teaching method. Exeter uses ONLY the Harkness method, even for math classes! Andover mixes in something like the Harkness method, as well as traditional teaching methods. As far as quality there really is NO difference between the two schools, they are both top notch, so it really comes down to a matter of personal taste.

thanks chacha you're a great help

They are both great school! However, if it were up to me, I would choose Exeter. I love Andover, but Exeter has that old world prep school "feel" like Deerfield. I love that feeling. :) Also, Exeter has more courses (in number) and is less restrictive on what you can take. Amdovers like, you take History 100, English 100, ext. Finally, I would choose Exeter because they have that amazing libray, even if it is kinda ugly, and seems less stressful. Hope this helps :D Remmember, they are both WONDERFUL schools, that is just my personal opinion. GOOD LUCK!!!!! :D

Exeter also offers a Classical Diploma ( for students who study Latin and Greek)- I am not sure if Andover offers something similar. Maybe someone out there knows.

Yeah, its cool, I just don't like modern architecture mixed with beutiful 19th century historic buildings. Did you know the library is on a stamp!!! You can buy it at the local EXETER town post office, or online. It's part of a modern materpieces of architecture stamp collection or something like that!! :)

Architecture students arrive at Exeter to oggle the structure every Fall.

When we looked last year we really felt the 2 schools were for very different people. Exeter was less social, a bit nerdy, much more formal (dress code), clearly for strong math/science kids. Their science bldg is amazing. Limited town and area. Big but very ugly library. Intellectual feel.

Andover was more New England (At Exeter it feels more like the UK), casual, prettier, kids seemed more social and to have more fun. Nice town with a lot to offer and short train ride to Boston. My California child liked it a lot and did not apply to Exeter at the 11th hour.

.

Astute observations.

Andover and Exeter are both great, but to me, it seemed that Andover was more laid-back and arty (something that I liked, as it reflected my personality), while Exeter was for serious students who are planning to excel in the scholarly field.

EXETER. No doubt. Stereotype. I don't think I can persuade anyone, but I can always try lols, because you really need an insider's point of view. Exeter Academy's students may be nerdy, but at Andover... I don't really know what exactly the admissions office looks for in a student but some kids at Andover are busted themselves. You ask yourself, how da hell did they get in??? Obviously, only a small percent, but still, they're so ugh. They didn't derserve to get accepted.

Thats a horrible thing to say that because someone gets a low SSAT score or has a flaw in there ap, maybe a couple of B's, that they shouldn't get excepted! I got a low 80 SSAT, and applied to 8 elites, only got two rejection. I have a very close friend on this board who had a lower SSAT, same as me, and got excepted to ANDOVER! Why, because she is probably a complete genious, and she has a WONDERFUL personality, has high ambitions, and works hard! So, if you got in with a low score, GONGRADULATIONS!! :D You DESERVE IT!! :D Honestly, admissions is so competitive now, even having a hook or legacy might not help, to get in to thses schools you really must be a GREAT applicant.

I DIDN't SAY THAT IT WAS A FLAW IN SSAT SCORE OR FLAW. Obviously there are some really GREAT kids out there who are really nervous when they take the test so they do bad and have a teacher that just doesn't like them as mush as they should, BUT IF you are IN A CLASS with them I MEAN YOU can totally tell if they're dumb or smart! you know wat i mean?

There is a reason--sometimes very specific--for each acceptance at Andover. The admissions committee is not arbitrary at all, let me assure you. Now, if we are asking if certain students DESERVE a spot there...

On topic: I myself was accepted into both Andover and Exeter. Both schools have their respective strengths: we have physics, Exeter has math, we have computer science, they have a better science center. We have Andover, Massachusetts, and they have Exeter, New Hampshire--and everything associated with the two locales. We have strained town-gown relations, they have a wasteland. We have 5 day weeks, they have a dress code. They have Harkness, we don't.

It's really the little things guys, look for fit.

OK, your right, sorry, I misunderstood. i definitely know what you mean, just like in a public school clasroom you can pick out the Amazing ones and the not so amazing ones. I get it :)

It's okay. misunderstandings happen all the time. and plz don't misunderstand. I'm a really nice person. LOLS. but I had a lot of friends who didn't get accepted who were really smart. and it made me sad at first, but when i got there, I felt angry - knowing my friends who wanted it so bad would've contributed more and worked harder.

Just a tid bit on Exeter's math program (around the harkness table).. It's very differnt then most schools. You get throughmaterial much faster by workign only with word problems.... I know it sounds rly strange but at your experience exeter be sure to go to a math class and observe! At the begining of each amth class the problems that were assigned the night before are put up on the board and the class goes over differnt ways of solving them (wiht teacher guidance sometimes)!

Yah the town of Exeter is a bit boring (ok rly boring) But there is a lot fo activiy on weekends... We do have saturday classes but they are only half days (and wednesdays are only half) to fit athletic competitions into the schedule.. Dress code for girls is not as bad as it sounds... You can get away with jeans and none athletic tops! Guy's have it a stricter, they have to wear ties... A couple years ago apparently there was a question of gettign rid of the dress code nd apparently a lot of girls protested saying they thought the guys in ties look is cute!

Also Andover housing system is very differnt than Exeters... Andover puts all freshman in freshman dorms while Exeter mixes all four years in every dorm (except for some houses which are for older students). I like the system at exeter because you get to know peopel in differnt years right at the start. ALlso andover has teams that are almost exclusivly for fresham... I like how exeter has teams that are mixed (although this does mean more cutting from sports teams).!

There are no 'freshman exclusive' teams except for boys JV3 soccer.

well all thirds teams are somewhat... Exeter has no thirds teams...! (also were not sore loosers and say that our swim teams should have wn saying they were swimmign against varsity and that the girls won unfairly)!
