Hi guys! I'm in a weird situation right now. It's always kind of been a childhood dream of mine to become an animator, but halfway through high school I decided to devote my time to learning languages instead, so by the time I went to college I hadn't taken a single art class in high school and I had decided to study Linguistics. During my Freshman year of college the allure of animation called me back, and now I'm trying to figure out my options.

Right now I'm enrolled at community college and taking nothing but art classes with hopes of compensating for being uninstructed all this time. I live in Austin and I had also been accepted to the University of Texas --- my plan had been to get core classes out of the way and take art classes, but when I started registering for UT classes I wasn't allowed into any art classes and I realized that I didn't even know what the gen ed requirements were for an animation student.

I'm specifically interested in 2D character animation, and the ultimate dream would be CalArts and Disney, but I know it's extremely competitive so I won't hold my breath.

I'd be very grateful for school recommendations and advice on how to transfer into their animation programs. Are there standard gen ed requirements for an animation student, or does it vary between school? Would core classes taken at community college satisfy those requirements?

(From my Freshman year I have mainly language and linguistics credits, and I also took an Astronomy course.)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer! I'm about to leave my computer and I have a feeling I left some information out, so if you need any more info please ask.

I can’t quite figure out (it is me, not you)
did you go to UT for a year, then now at CC, or you did not go to UT at all because you could not get any art class, or you are going UT now and talking some art class at CC?
because if you are at UT I want to say stay there.
astronomy! cool! linguistics! why not! try to see if you can change your major, thou UT does not have animation major as is, but have all what you need to know to become competent artist if that is your goal.
My understanding is that you have to apply as freshman to UT college of fine art with portfolio and such if you want to major in art. But once you are in UT, you could still change to art major, it may take longer to finish but it is doable.

If you are not in UT, it differ from school to school and state to state but I don’t think any CC art class credits or even degree would transfer well, you might have to start from scratch unless you are in CA that has what the word? TAG thing agreement between four year school and local CCs.

Sorry for the late reply!
I’ve never taken classes at UT — I spent my Freshman year at the University of Washington. It was immediately after registration at UT’s new-student orientation that I decided to go to community college instead.

The thing is, I’m really not interested in graduating from UT. The only reasons why I applied was because 1) it was too late in the year to start looking for animation schools, 2) it’s super convenient to commute to from my house, and 3) I thought I’d be able to take gen-ed classes (to transfer over as core classes at an animation school) and art classes to help me improve my skills and develop a portfolio.

Even though I know I’ll probably have to start over as a freshman, I’d much prefer to go to a school with an actual animation degree
