Anime’s always been a big part of my life and I’m super passionate about it considering it shaped a lot of the traits and helped get me into the hobbies that most people know me for. Would it be a bad idea to write an essay talking about some of the ways anime has helped me or should I just scrap it and try to find a different topic?
Even though I am in the same boat as you, no. I love anime but to those old readers, you might as well be saying your life is influenced by cartoons.
I’m not sure I agree.
If it’s something you’re passionate about, then I say you write a draft and see how it looks. And it probably won’t be the first anime essay “those old readers” come across-- anime has been around for a while and you two aren’t the first 2 in the reader’s experience to enjoy it.
But there are a few caveats:
- Don’t assume that the reader knows anything about anime. We all know it’s an Asian cartoon-- don’t assume the reader knows much more than that.
- Spend VERY few of those precious 650 words describing it. This essay has to be about YOU, not an attempt to convert the reader into an anime fan. So it’s going to be a tightrope walk-- pulling what you want out of anime without saying too much about it.
Remember, at its most basic form, this essay is a sales job. It’s purpose is to give them a reason to say yes to your application. Every word you type should be with that goal in mind.
If you discover at some point that this essay isn’t doing that, it may be time to re-evaluate.
