What kind of city is Ann Arbor?

Better than your username.

Hah it’s great.

I’d like to know as well. The environment around UM is an important factor in deciding whether or not I will choose to attend it.

Hardly a city…downtown is like 2 blocks…

^^Of course Ann Arbor is a city. It is a small city to be sure, but for a town of it’s size it offers a lot.

It was rated the 10th best place to retire per CNN.

It’s really hard to describe it to someone who’s never been here. You should visit. Ann Arbor is definitely biggger than two blocks. If you have a car you can explore a lot more of the outskirts that are still Ann Arbor. There are a lot of restaurants, bars, & shops here. I’m too old to know if there are discos or clubs. My daughter really likes the idea of NYC, Chicago or LA as the next step up. Ann Arbor is not a small college town. I’d call it a midsized to a large college town.

hands down, ann arbor is one of the best college towns in america. visit and you’ll know what i’m talking about

Yeah, I agree with the two above posters. You just have to go and visit it to see how great it really is.

I think it’s a mixed bag, and a somewhat polar one. Some people like A2, some people dont like A2. But it seems like people who like A2 thinks its heaven while people who dislike A2 REALLY dislike A2.

^^That could be said for just about any place on the planet.

Nice enough city. considered the “cultural capital of Michigan”, for whatever that’s worth. 5th or 6th largest city in the state, but that isn’t saying too much, as outside of Grand Rapids and Detroit there aren’t any big metropolises. Great restaurants imo.

It’s a lot of fun just to walk around. If you were to custom build a college town, this would be it. Maybe I’d add an In n Out burger but there is a Five Guys…I can live with that. But yeah, it’s perfect.

I’ve lived in Ann Arbor my entire life, and it’s pretty boring I think… UNLESS you have a lot of friends there. Then there is plenty of entertainment. Ann Arbor is pretty boring if you’re just walking around alone, but with friends it is pretty fun.

^Well of course you think it’s boring. Everyone thinks their home city is boring. You’ve lived there your entire life, there’s nothing left for you to do.

During the summers month before Junior year in high school, I worked at UMich pretty much every weekday. Needless to say, I felt like I was a student at Michigan. Ann Arbor was a wonderful city, especially as a high school student who has beforehand only visited A2 for fun (not pass by) just once. A2 has amazing, and I mean AMAZING restaurants: Madras Masala (Best Indian buffet in A2 if not in all of Michigan), Jerusalem Garden (Amazing Middle Eastern Food), Amer’s and Zingerman’s (Amer’s=amazing affordable deli and best frozen yogurt in the world; Zingerman’s=great gourmet deli and unrivaled bakery). I can go on and on. Oh yeah, did I mention these are just a few minutes away from classes. Yep, its not like other colleges where you have to exit the campus and use a transportation to get to the restaurants (i.e. Duke, Johns Hopkins). You simply have to cross the Diag and boom, your there. For entertainment, you got the UMich Museums, Michigan Theater & State Theater, Hill Auditorium, BIG HOUSE!, Crisler Arena, Yost Arena, canoeing, the Arboretum… So A2 is a really fun place.

It’s a large college town, much better than others in terms of things to do, restaurants, book stores, etc. Great place and a lot of people who go to Mich love it, but it’s not a city in the San Francisco or Boston sense of the word.

Ann arbor is great. I go to high school here, and it’s tons of fun to hang out downtown on weekends. There are a variety of restaurants, and the food is great. There are lots of great independent coffee shops, too. There’s lots to do, with Hill auditorium and the art museum, various little vintage stores to explore. The clothing shops are pretty good in what they offer as well, though the selections available are fewer than what I’d like. Records stores are always fun as well, and the blind pigs has good indie venues if you’re into that scene. The arb is fun for hanging out and picnics. Not a lot of clubs, but there arebases and hookah lounges. Plus, lots of college parties, so nothing
to worry about! Good variety of markets, with trader joes, whole foods, the co-op and the farmers market. Kerrytown is quaint, as well. Thr mall is not too impressive, but it works. Overall, Nice mix of culture and partying, all in a great college town. I love it!

Ann Arbor is not small. With a population of 110,000 residents, it is a mid-sized city / large college town. Whoever said Ann Arbor is two blacks is ignorant. Ann Arbor’s downtown is made up of roughly 30 blocks, contains hundreds of restaurants and cafes, many bookstores and boutiques and a few movie theaters. Within the city limits, you have two, admittedly average, malls and all sorts of major supermarkets and national outlets.

Overall, I would say that Ann Arbor would make virtually everybody’s top 5 college town list and is often rated as one of the best cities to live in.

Obviously, it is not nearly as large as Chicago, New York etc…, but it is definitely a nice city and one of the best places for college students and young professionals to live in.
