Ann Arbor IS the top college sports town

Must be true. Somebody at Forbes says so.

I know students at the school that think it's true. :)

Top college sports towns - Yahoo! Sports

"The University of Michigan is most famous for its football team, the Wolverines, who play in the packed confines of the Big House, a stadium that holds 106,201 fans. Of course, with the way the Wolverines played this past season (their record was 3-9), it’s surprising that many people flocked to the stadium every Saturday.

Loyalty might explain it, though maybe it’s just fans’ motivation to visit Ann Arbor before and after the football game. Who can blame them? The small city of 114,000 boasts top-flight restaurants and bars, a symphony and ballet, as well as museums and concert halls hosting national-level entertainment.

And what full-time residents also know: Ann Arbor has great public schools, low crime and affordable housing. Not surprisingly, it all adds up to the highest rank on our list of best college towns. It beats out Palo Alto, Calif., home to Stanford, and Madison, Wis., home to the University of Wisconsin."

I'm not surprise at all Ann Arbor made the list, for it's a good college town.

Though I've had a hard time finding University of Michigan- Ann Arbor halls, and today I was able to come into contact with them on google street view. Let me tell you... I was surprise. I still plan on applying to the school, but my ideal that the halls had large lawn of green grass in front of it... it didn't. Also directly across the street from the halls were houses that were dated, and lack of renavation/ upkeep.

Don't let my comment above confuse you though. There are parts of University of Michigan-Ann Arbor that have large lawn, and Ann Arbors downtown seems to be really vibrant... and more than just a strip of stores.

Check out the Law School....

And the Washentaw area just south and east of campus.

There is also an Arborteum next to some of the dorms.

...or the diag...

...or North Campus...

I think I've looked at some of those, but I will most likely check them again. Google street view can be helpful, but it also doesn't take long for the images to be outdated ( how long would it take them to recover everything?). I guess the best campus I've seen so far is Michigan State University, and I was sorta expecting University of Michigan- Ann Arbor to look similar, and ofcourse with a great college town right across the street from campus.

University of Michigan has a very nice campus. I haven't seen Michigan State's campus but I've heard it's very nice. Prettier.

If you could mix UC Davis and UC Berkeley up, that is what the University of Michigan's campus reminds me of. Of course, you can't do that and you probably have never seen either UC campus. :)

Lol

No I haven't, I use google street view ( eventhough there are areas it's outdated on ). Yes, Michigan State University campus is outstanding... but not so much for their downtown, but progress in that area is being made.
I think Ann Arbor campus is nice as well, but not that much green lawn as I thought... and more so reminds me of Boston University a little. I don't know if University of Michigan- Ann Arbor board leaders decided to make the campus like that, or geographic reasons.

Ann Arbor was ranked top for sports town, not only I'm not surprise due to downtown Ann Arbor, but also University of Michigan- Ann Arbor containing the largest football stadium.

I toured both campuses (UM and MSU) over the winter break and I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they were different though - UM is more integrated with AA while MSU is more of a distinct campus with East Lansing across the street. Both have their fair share of old buildings, but MSU has a bit more green space. I liked MSU's campus better but I like Ann Arbor more than East Lansing. Didn't end up even applying to UM though because they don't offer a program I'm looking for.

Yeah Ann Arbor downtown does offer more than East Lansing.

( May be off topic, but East Lansing is making progress downtown... downtown Lansing is making progress as well)

Google Maps is a terrible place to look because Central Campus is for the most part a big group of buildings that line the Diag. Go on a campus tour and check it out.

I should say...while Michigan's campus is by no means poorly kept, if you want to look at pretty green lawns, head to Comerica Park. If you want to attend the top university in the state, head to Ann Arbor.

The same survey also ranks Stanford's Palo Alto as #2; I never heard of it being a big college sports town, despite Stanford being awesome at sports overall

Google Streetview makes everything look like total crap.

i would take an actual tour of both campuses. i've visited msu's campus many times, but, before yesterday, i had never seen u of m's campus. i actually loved central campus and downtown ann arbor. personally, i think that campus-wise, u of m is way better than msu.

Ann Arbor downtown is better than East Lansing downtown. Although to be honest, Michigan State University campus is much better than University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. Yeah University of Michigan- Ann Arbor diag is nice, but that doesn't make up the whole campus.

Coolbreeze, have you actually visited the University of Michigan campus?

Am I the only one who thinks half of MSU's campus is stuck in the 60's? The older side looked really nice though.

And I am surprised Athens (GA), Austin and Gainesville did not make the list.

I am really surprised Stanford made the list. Palo Alto...a college town?

I don't think any part of Michigan State University campus is stuck in the 60's. I actually like seeing the architecture.

I haven't visited University of Michigan- Ann Arbor campus yet. I'm excited, and plan on visiting the campus my senior year. Although just looking at Michigan State University campus on google street view than University of Michigan- Ann Arbor it's still evident ( at least to me ) Michigan State University campus is outstanding.

Actually coolbreeze, MSU faithfull tend to overblow MSU's campus. You should visit other campuses before judging. In terms of landscaping and nature, MSU's campus is indeed very nice and prettier than Michigan's. But in terms of architecture and functionality, Michigan's campus is nicer than MSU's.
