Annoyed at all of the technical glitches, etc that have occurred with the ACT and SAT

In June, it was the two sections not being scored, then in October, the writing was delayed for many students, not there are transmission problems!

So kid receives an email from Ohio State that app is incomplete due to scores not being received. They note that they are working with ACT to rectify the situation. Most of the schools that she applied to were early action, and a specific merit scholarship that was due by 11/1. I truly hope that this is not counted against her. I know they say it will not, but it doesnt make me feel any better that this is pretty much affecting most of her apps. Ok , vent over.

There’s another delay that isn’t getting much notice. D took the “School Day SAT” on Oct. 14. Students were told that scores would be ready 3 weeks from that date. LAST week they were told, through the counselor, that Nov. 5 would be the release date. THIS week, counselor got an email that release date would be THIS Friday. Of course, for kids who want to retake, regular registration for the Dec. test has passed. Others have missed deadlines. These businesses are in it for the money-they know they have kids over a barrel and the longer the delays, the more money they get in late fees and rush scores.

I hope more and more colleges go test optional. Time to end these monopolies.

@sseamom Im ticked, because they are truly messing with scholarships at this point.

It is annoying. Things happen, but this is a pattern of inefficiency. I find myself thinking ‘you had one job…’

For many of the seniors at D’s school, this is their first time taking the SAT. They’re freaking out not having their scores in time for certain scholarships or application deadlines. Many of them don’t have the luxury of multiple retakes or to even have Saturdays off of work to take them. The free in-school option is supposed to HELP them.

CAmidwesternmom-they really don’t care, at all. They know that thousands of kids will still sign up and pay the fees and pay the rush scores month after month, year after year. They can do whatever they want, because people buy the hype that these two tests determine a student’s worth as a college scholar. It’s infuriating.

It is highly annoying.

It is obvious to me that ACT and SAT both need to step up their game. But what is their incentive to do so? They have no competition.

This is not acceptable as millions of dollars in scholarship monies are on the line.

Take some personal responsibility. Who takes an October test with a November 1 application deadline? It’s offered 6 times per year, every year. Plan ahead.

Parent1337-kids who come from 1st gen, low-income families who haven’t had the luxury of taking the test 3 or 4 times already by the time they get to their senior year. Kids who are looking at Nov. 15 deadlines, which are likely to come and go before the Oct. 14 “school day” test scores are out. Kids looking at mid-year deadlines, but won’t get Oct. scores before the registration deadline for the regular price Dec. 5 SAT. Kids who have taken the ACT but wanted to see if the SAT made more sense. Kids whose parents don’t speak English and who have no idea that they were “supposed” to sign their kids up last year or even sophomore year. The list is pretty long, actually.

While those are not Nov. 1 deadlines, the impact is very real.

Scores were sent from earlier test sittings. Reports were ordered in advance with the expectation that they would be sent at the end of October. I’m all for personal responsibility, but they should do a reasonably good job and in the past few months, they have not. Saying they need to correct their errors and improve their processes doesn’t mean people aren’t taking responsibility.

@parent1337 my issue is not the SAT but the Sept ACT and yes it is reasonable for me to assume that they can successfully transmit scores by 11/1 to the appropriate colleges ESPECIALLY since I paid for it. We did not take advantage of the free scores.

However I certainly can feel for those students who took the June SAT, which SAT messed up the scoring, so they felt the need to retake it in Oct. that had nothing to do with personal responsibility.

I read in San Francisco that they cancelled the SAT at one site because the College Board had neglected to reserve it.

@whatthewhat omg, I hadn’t heard that one.

Yes, well, my issue was also with the Sept. ACT. I think the scores have been sent. Nov. 15 deadline here for one of the applications. Yes, should have planned better. Should have made my child score higher the first time around last spring, LOL.

Both the SAT and ACT have been awful lately. My son is a junior. He ended up with the June SAT mess up and the Sept ACT slow reporting. He was lucky it didn’t matter. I think the real problem was for Seniors who took the June SAT and needed to use the Oct SAT for subject tests. Normally there would not be a problem doing that. However because of the June SAT screw up the kids took the Sept ACT as a replacement for the SAT. There is no way those kids would know that the ACT would also end up having problems. Both companies need to get their act together.

Here in Bangalore there is ONE site that offers the ACT. The kids who took it in September are still waiting for grades! Supposedly they are going through “verification” but ACT is not communicating with very stressed parents other than to say there will be a refund given. TERRIBLE.

Also, worth noting that the College Board’s delays were not limited to October test. My daughter took SATs last March and ordered some additional scores to be sent on October 15th and they were sent within a week but the scores that she ordered on October 16th took over two weeks because of the College Board’s questionable decision to switch computer systems in October. Thankfully, her Early Action schools both notified her that she is in their EA pools.

I had the same issue with ordering scores (ironically from the messed up June test) on October 14 and their not making the Nov 1 deadline. Luckily the school accepted all scores ordered before Oct 28 due to the screw up. My poor S has had HORRIBLE luck with the College Board. He is taking this dumb test one more time hoping to bring up his math score just a bit for one of his Jan 15 deadline schools. I can’t wait to see what they throw at us this time!

I was surprised to get an email from Paypal yesterday informing me of a refund for the rush scores that I paid for and didn’t receive. I didn’t file a claim or call, they just issued the refund. So, since I have complained about them, I wanted to at least give them credit for doing the right thing in this case. Did anyone else get a refund?
