Another admissions/chances question

If he was a genius, I would have expected much higher scores from him...I got a 112 composite last year (102 AMC-12, 1 AIME), and that's decent for my school but not anywhere near top, especially since it's still like 90 points away from qualifying for the USAMO. But I go to a magnet school where I think some seventy people qualify for the AIME each year.

well, he knew his math, he used to study it for fun and he was looking at my teacher masters degree type math books. Im hoping on getting a (130-150) on amc 12, and around 10 on the aime, to make it into USAMO. Even then i probably won't get into Caltech, because my verbal scores are too low. My friends keeps saying that i have a good chance for caltech (because of my math and physics), because they say that tech schools dont care about verbal scores. this is absolutely wrong, schools want me to be well rounded. Therefore, i stand no chance.
Im surprised of how many people qualify for aime at your school tencia.
Even so, i think that you have good solid scores for Caltech. And you also have a great science background, and those tech schools respect that.

We'll all find out in a week and a half, won't we?

you're a pretty smart girl, especially in math and science.

MUHAHA same stats as me eh..well good luck

Tencia, MIT?

I applied, I don't really want to go. As much as it is a wonderful school, it is just way too cold there.

According to a stats lecture my friend went to, there's a negative correlation between Verbal and caltech admissions.

=D

I'm sure Verbal does help (there are lurking variables that obscure that fact) -- it may make the difference. Well roundedness is important -- it is not all-important. If you want to come here, apply anyway. See what happens. I'd like to say off-hand that judging from the fact that some sports teams go by "we don't lose all the time -- we won a game in 1998," your central passion still should be math and science. It isn't right to say "I have no chance" just 'cause of a 600 in Verbal. That said, the average admitee does have a high verbal score.

I do hope you get in, tencia. Your stats, extracurrics, research and etc. look good, even if I've sat in on an admissions committee. I was rather surprised when I got in, personally, because I didn't do anything over the top like many of my friends here.

Scott

600 in verbal, pff, i wish

Hey tongos, you mentioned that your friend got a full ride to MIT... Was it really based on that merit? Because I thought MIT didn't do merit scholarships. That's what I've heard at least. Was he financially needy or did some other special circumstances apply? Not that I'm likely to get a full ride or anything, but I might qualify for something.
