Hey, I have a question about the PPSP program at Case Western. This is something I found out about during a recent campus visit, and I'm very interested in it.

Although I know I'm academically qualified for the program (1st in class, 4.15 GPA, 36 ACT score), I am having serious worries about my extracurricular background. The idea of med school was something that I just recently got into, which means that I don't really have anything like volunteering at a hospital or EMT training. The only thing I might have is that I was a NYLF on Medicine Nominee, but I don't know how impressive that actually is.

Did I basically screw myself of any possibility for this program by not taking a bigger interest in medicine in 9th and 10th grade?

Yea, "NYLF on Medicine Nominee" is basically a joke. You are paying to put something on your application (Although it does sound cool to do). Without having real experience you might as well save your money and not apply. Thats what I have heard.

OK, so I have another question. For the NYLF, it's not like some teacher nominated me or I applied online, but they actually sent me an invitation through the mail based on my test scores. Does that make it any more impressive?

Also, I declined to accept the nomination at the time because I thought I wasn't going to go into medicine. Around 3 months ago I tried calling back to see if I could still attend, but they told me there was a long waiting list, and I wasn't able to go. However, they told me that they would contact me sometime this December and I'd be allowed to go after my senior year. If I put on "Will be attending NYLF on Medicine this summer", will that look impressive?

I actually went to NYLF this summer. To be honest, it was a fun social experience. I met alot of cool people and basically chilled for 10 days. We didn't really have alot of medically related experiences etc...

The only thing I got from NYLF is that UCLA's really nice which makes me want to go there, where it's nice and sunny all the time.

Ray516, Application to CASE is free and PPSP application is much easier than other BS/MD's, and you, probably have a good chance at PPSP and you WILL have a huge MERIT scholarship to go to CASE. However, get med. ECs!!! It is a must!!! You still have time. Good luck!
