Another "Chance" Thread (any Dartmouth BA winners out there?)

**Just got deferred at Yale, so I'm kinda wondering what I'm missing at the moment, and am reaaally hoping I get into Dartmouth..

Also, if anyone here is a Dartmouth Book Award Winner--how much does that help you in the admissions process? Does it even help you at all? I don't know much about the award, but I'm hoping it's an edge in admissions..**

Awards: I won't list all of them, but I've gotten most of the subject awards my school offers every year, along with awards for several of the clubs I'm a part of. Major ones, though, are the Dartmouth Book Award last year, and National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist this year.

Teacher Recs: Hopefully good
Guidence Rec: Very good--I read it. She talked about exactly what I needed her to talk about--how I'm not someone who spreads herself too thin, and how I'm extremely dedicated and involved in everything I do, and that the only problem I've ever faced is not having enough time to do everything. Plus, she brought up the fact that I'm in her office every year fighting to fit more classes in my schedule (which doesn't work out, thanks to stupid art requirements).

State: MA
School: Very small public school (class of 130), but also one of the top public schools in the state (so far this year, 12 people got in early to NESCACs, 1 at Duke, 3 at Harvard, etc etc.) Three people got into Dartmouth last year, but I don't know if that helps/hurts me.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income: It's up there

Hooks: I'm in the middle of my Gold Award project for Girl Scouts, which involves a 70+ hour initiative to help organizations in my community and school set up and learn how to maintain web sites to further their goals as organizations. I'm leading a workshop for adult and student community members interested in learning how to create web sites, creating a guide that'll be in the library to creating sites, and helping senior citizens learn how to use computers in general.

Also.. hopefully getting the Dartmouth BA last year'll help me

If you're worried with your stats, I should probably be suicidal (3.4, 31 ACT) Good luck, I think you have a great chance!

I'd probably say you're in but to be able to positively say that is too hard with ivy league admissions. So, you have a better chance of admissions -based on what I've read- than most applicants. Good Luck.

You look good for Dartmouth. Book awards don't help, they are a local alum thing.

You probably want to think about what was missing that didn't get you into Yale. Yale and Dartmouth have differing selectivity levels, but really not that different. Everything you write looks good, but really quite common, don't you think? I would suggest taking a second look at your essay if you want to make yourself a bit more appealing for the regular decision round.

Ahhh, pity on the BA thing. I thought it made some difference, since every Dartmouth BA recipient at my school has gotten into Dartmouth over the past five years, lol.

And, yeah, I think I may rewrite one of my essays and focus on my girl scout gold award project--the web design thing, since in my opinion that's the most unique thing I've got going for me. Plus, the Dartmouth student I talked to when I visited got really excited when I said I designed web sites and mentioned the lack of such people they've got.

.. then again, my Yale student interviewer said a similar thing, and that didn't exactly help, lol. x_x

Good chance, methinks. (But Ivies tend to be sorta unpredictable.)

I will tell you what I am telling my son ( and all of his friends ), I have come to the conclusion that who gets in where is somewhat of a crapshoot. So many applicants are well qualified, what makes one school accept a student while another school rejects them sometimes is a somewhat random decision (read the book "The Gatekeepers" very informative), so what does it all mean.... apply WHEREVER you want, you may get in, you may not, but if you don't apply you will never know! Good luck!!
