Another chances thread

When I ask my college counselors what my chances are, they all say "well, there are many factors yadda yadda", which I know is true, but I'm still curious. If any KNOWLEDGEABLE person can tell me my chances, please do. Please only answer if you know what you are talking about. Im applying for engineering at cornell and northwestern-
SAT: 2320: math:770 verbal:790 writing:760
SATII: math2c:780 chemistry: 750
gpa: 3.58
AP's taken/taking: AP chem(5), AP lit, AP lang(5), AP calc b/c, AP physics C (both), AP psych

i dont know how strong my main ec's are either-
student pilot, get license in a couple months
playing drums for 5 yrs
volunteer work for habitat for humanity
tennis for 3 yrs
started community service club at school

Also, how important are your senior semester grades? Do they make or break an admissions decision?

Gpa weighted or un, and also what is your rank.

ur senior year grades aren't something to fool around with of course u don't want a D or lower nor would u want to just "AIM" for a C thinking that you alrdy got in. If u are borderline to entering ur college it will either break or make their decision of letting u in.

ur GPA might be a little bit low if its weighed but ur SAT score is outstanding

my school doesn't rank or weight (go figure) so that gpa is unweighted..of course. Pity the fool who has a 3.58 weighted. (no offense, its just mr T talkin.)

Thats wacked man. Its not like u have the best grades on the block.

they should automatically reject u for being so cocky

don't be so arrogant

yea many peoepl have 3.58 weighted

perhaps I am unclear on the meaning of a weighted gpa, and thus misspoke. please fill me in. Oh, and pity the fool who takes Mr. T talk seriously.

AP and certain honors classes are considered 5 points if u get an A, 4 points -B, 3 points, C, 2 points , D F they don't want that crap. These points can make ur GPA exceed 4.00
Schools don't weigh ur GPA but colleges do.

much appreciated Diazt3r. Yes, i have a 3.58 unweighted, and I apologize if i offended anybody, it was merely a lighthearted joke

"but miles you shouldnt joke about peoples grades it hurts their feelings"

lighten up

anybody else care to comment please?
pretty pretty please with sugar on top?

You have a chance at both Cornell and Northwestern but it is not looked favorably upon that your SATs are comparatively much higher than your GPA. Admissions officers often view that as laziness. However, I still think that if you write great essays and get amazing recs, you can be accepted to these schools. Senior year grades are fairly important. Your chances at either of these schools will be greatly increased if you applied ED.

It must suck for schools that don't weigh. I have a 3.6 unweighted GPA and I'm almost top 5% in my class (although we do class rank by weighted). I feel like there are people on here with 3.9 who don't even make top 10%. But ya, the colleges might look at it as laziness but that SAT score is ridiculous

I know for a fact Cornell is one of the less competitive Ivy schools, but its engineering program is brutally competitive. I'd say you have an 80-90 percent chance of getting in. (assuming your recs and weighted GPA are solid, closer to 95)

LOL at anguine. 90 percent with a 3.5?

2320 SAT score? and like he said before that 3.5 is unweighted...if colleges see a super high SAT score and a mediocre GPA, they will most likely assume one of the two things listed below:
1) The student is lazy
2) WOW! That school the student attends sure grades hard...
*The entire purpose of the SAT is to provide a comparison between students from all walks of life. This way a kid who attends an easy public school in farmtown, US who has a 4.0 gpa can be compared to a kid with a 3.7 gpa from a competitive school.
--Honestly, as long as this person has not started to fail classes, colleges will see a high test score and say "Well, looks like we will accept him and raise our average SAT score to make our school look even more competitive so more people will spend $70 a pop to apply to our school"

You are in good shape...maybe I overestimated the percentage, but you are in good shape.

Thank you for the feedback- yes I do attend a difficult school and I have taken the harder courses. I hope they dont see me as a lazy student...

..2320 sat score..everyone at Cornell engineering has scores like that...you may have real tough time getting in with that GPA

That's interesting sports, the fact that everybody at cornell engineering has a similar score to that. hmm...very interesting. So cornell's engineering school is unlike every other university's engineering school in that there is never a mix of scores? Everybody just has around the same score, fascinating. Well thanks for bringing that up.

however, yes, my unweighted 3.5 something is a bit low.
