another driven junior, haha

Hey there CC'ers! I managed to stumble upon this sight while searching the web for some facts about admissions and I am glad I did! I just wanted to see what some of you might think my chances are at some colleges, so here are some facts about myself.

-Asian male from California
-High School is not that competitive (class size is 482 - UW I am ranked 10/482, which is in the top 2%, this semester, my weighted GPA was about 4.65)
-Haven't taken the SAT's yet, but I just signed up to take the one on March 10th
-My target score is 2200-2250 (I'm not so great with standardized tests, but I guess I have to get used to it =P)

EC's include:
-FBLA - Member for one year, VP the next, am aiming to be a section officer (basically a regional position), successful in competition, we just held a Health Expo for the community for our community service project, planning a fundraiser for the March of Dimes (as you can probably tell, i devote a lot of time to this club)
-Marching Band - Drum Major (not so musically gifted but I am trying! I think that this position is more about the leadership =P)
-Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra
-California Scholarship Federation / NHS at our school is open to seniors only, but i do plan on joining at the end of the semester
-Mock Trial - been a part of this since middle school
-Key Club (i am all about community service - plan on volunteering for a local hospital in the summer)
-Junior Representative to the School Site Council
-Co-coordinator of the School Student Forum
-Youth-In-Government
-a couple of others, but they may be insignificant

My dream school is Harvard (it has been ever since... I can't even remember when), but I'll leave that as a reach.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time!

It's very hard to tell without seeing your SAT scores, as that is very important. You're going to need to raise your ranking that's for sure. In terms of Harvard applicants and those who got accepted... to be honest, your EC's are below average to mediocre.

Look into some UC's. They're wonderful schools.

i would agree with august...continue working on leadership and study your ass off for the SAT. make sure you take a lot of practice tests, and delay it if you want more time rather than rushing it (depends on how much prep youve done so far) ur GPA is pretty good tho.

my ranking of 10/482 includes freshman year. On my transcript, I'm ranked number 1 (10-12 grade - this is still unweighted). If it helps, I've been part of a summer program called the Academy of Business Leadership. An eighth grader at the time, I beatout all the seniors to be valedictorian. Throughout the program, I met and networked with several high-profile people from companies such as Merrill Lynch and Wells Fargo. I've also had to deal with many family problems in which I could write about in my personal statements.

Thanks again for your suggestions!

actually, I'm thinking of applying to that program. How was it? Do you think they did a professional job?

Haha Jay Chou...

wait, haha, cookie, what compelled you to say Jay Chou? Do i know you? And August, the program is really great and professional. We had weekly field trips to fortune 500 companies and they were a blast. the thing is, if you really want to do well, you have to put yourself out there and approach people, don't let them approach you.

about the Academy of Business Leadership, what exactly happens from 8am to 2:30pm? do you think the 7 weeks were worth it? (not considering that it was free..)

if you're interested in attending ABL, please read all of the following as it can sway your decision either way

it was definitely worth it.

the typical day for the first couple of weeks basically consists of a small lecture, time in the computer lab to play the stock market game, and rearing towards the end of the program, you spend most of the class time working on your business plans and whatnot.

it seems very boring, but it gets very laidback, but not in the bad way. at our site (cal state la) the instructor used to be some bigwig at enron (before it bellied up) and we got to listen to his stories, all of which were very interesting. he was also currently attending the Marshal School of Business at USC and on the side, he was a director. you'll find that most of the instructors are well experienced and credible, for example, the year my sister went to ABL, her instructor was a graduate from harvard's kennedy school of business.

anyway, although this program comes off as boring and uninteresting, it is the complete opposite. Sure, there were some boring (very informative, though) lectures, but there are sooo many things that make it all worth it. For example, throughout the program, there was a fundraising competition between the five different sites. at our site (CSULA) the instructor split the class up into 3 different groups and each group was given a small startup fund (out of the intructor's own pocket) and was to make their own little business and devise a way to make money. So, I found myself roaming throughout the campus selling my groups product a lot of time. it was the hands-on experience like this that made sitting through lectures worth while.

hope that helps!

thanks for the info. i'm currently a junior and i'm thinking about how i want to spend this upcoming summer. for undergrad, i'd like to major in business admin/accounting/or economics. still a bit fuzzy, but just one of the business-related ones. let me just ask you this. would you have chosen to do something else that summer, if given a time machine? =)

Some good business/econ schools (ranging from reaches/matches/safeties)

UMich
UC's
USC
BC
UChicago
Northwestern
UPenn
Cornell
UVa
NYU
UTexas

honestly FellowCCViewer, I wouldn't have done anything else that summer. I went just as I was about to enter high school and it was a nice transition period for me. the teachers, interns, and fellows were so amazing and so were the awesome field trips. i think i may just go again =D

im not sure i really want to go undergrad for business haha. i just went to a breakfast with a congressman and now im contemplating whether i should major in poli sci. but for business schools, upenn's wharton is number 1 in the nation. harvard's kennedy is up on the list. as for USC's marshall, i just couldnt stand going to USC for college. the surrounding is just horrible with the slummish part of the city and the crime rates (but the campus is great). not the safest nor nicest place to go to college. besides, im a bruin =P so its ucla's anderson if anything =P.

thanks afchang for your info. cookie said "jay chou" because of my username. "November's Chopin"... well August's chopin here. ring a bell?

Well, the thing is ABL sounds great... I was a little suspicious on why it was free, but I guess you said it nicely. Here's what I think though; after looking at what you described to me, I'd probably do better if I just take up an internship, because that'll give the real "hands-on" experience. ABL seems a bit too general.. like an introduction course (I didn't like how it was open to even people as young as 8th graders). But yeahh, that's just my op.

Anyway, back onto the original subject. What is your PSAT score? That's a pretty good indicator of what you will get on the real SAT

Why does everyone wanna go to Harvard? Have you ever visited there. Quite frankly, it looks boriing.

Yes, that's true. Indeed it is; I think Harvard is very overrated

afchang23:

UCB/UCLA: Match

harvard is very over rated, especially when im reading these other kid's incredible posts. but its professors such as the one in this video that make me want to go this amazing institution.

rofl, he just seems like such a cool prof. watch them in order:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iAwS7vzvLnY
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TQvVLhWOiis

they never fail to make me laugh.

anyone else applying to COSMOS?

afchang23, it hink you'd be successful anywhere you go! =)
