Another (dumb) question about cello audition repertoire

So- I think we’re (I’m) confused. When it says “play two contrasting pieces”, could that mean a concerto and a bach suite, or is it two concertos (or the equivalent)?

He’s preparing 6 things (Kodaly, 1st movement; Saint Saens, 1st movement; two Bachs; a Piatti; scales & arpeggios), but now I’m thinking for most schools, maybe just the Kodaly and a Bach if that’s what contrasting pieces mean?

And then I just noticed that one school says contrasting movements from a sonata or concerto, so does that mean he has to do two movements from the same concerto or sonata? Or could it mean two movements from different concertos/sonatas?

Sorry for all the questions!

Those are good questions and the wording “from a sonata or concerto” seems to imply two movements of the same piece, but it’s unclear. He should call or email and ask. My daughter has had to ask those kinds of questions a couple of times–for example one school wanted a concerto movement “with cadenza” but the one she was going to play didn’t have a cadenza so she called to check.

Interesting. I supposed I assumed they always want to see a piece with the cadenza, but then again, that makes the piece a lot longer. Ok, he’ll have to get some clarification from those schools. Whew.
