I have an orchestra/symphony audition the first week of September and one of the requirements is playing 2 contrasting pieces OR 1 piece that has great contrasts.

I would really like to play Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1. Is it contrasting enough that I would only have to prepare this piece? Or should I also find another piece to audition with? If so, any suggestions?

From what I infer about the orchestra from the audition requirement mentioned, Prok 1 should be fine: after all, it consists of 3 contrasting movements which more than meets the requirement for 2 contrasting pieces. Even the Andantino alone has enough contrast between the slow lyrical opening and the later more technically demanding passages that it would probably suffice for your orchestra. Whoever auditions you will probably have time for just some excerpts from the concerto; they may even ask you to select two contrasting passages, so go prepared with a couple passages in mind and well-rehearsed.

Violinist143: I haven’t been working on much lately, but I have Saint-Saens No. 3 under my fingers pretty well. Maybe Zigeunerweisen, Mendelssohn, and Sibelius too, but I haven’t touched those in a while.

But thanks so much to all of you that commented! Your guys’ advice was really helpful! :)
