Another Generic Chances Forum

I’m currently a stressed junior extremely concerned about college, and I just wanted to try creating one of these kinds of forums. Although there are a multitude of other factors that goes in to the college decisions process, I would like to get a sense of my own chances of getting into certain colleges. My dream college is UCLA’s school of nursing (really competitive :")) It would be so helpful if you could contribute your input ^^ This is just a basic gist of my stats as I need to update a lot of areas.

GPA 10th and 11th (unweighted): 3.99, (weighted) 4.54 || 6 AP’s senior year & ROP medical assistant (cr ies)
SAT: first time ~1400, working towards a min.1500
SUBJECT TESTS: going to take bio and math II (aiming for 800)

EXTRACURRICULARS:
positions

  • HOSA president (a medical competition club)
  • Key Club Kiwanis Family Chair (service club)
  • Running for CSF Class of 2019 Representative (we’ll seee)

service

  • 150+ hours of service, Presidential Service Award (i.e consistently at hospital, senior center, reading to children)

other

  • Second degree black belt and now job as an instructor
  • Completion of Certificate of Merit lv.10 piano
  • Bilateral Seal in Spanish and Korean
  • STEM research program over the summer
  • internship for potential congressman

AP & honors classes: 12 throughout high school, I’ve taken the hardest courses offered at my school each year. (minus CP chem)
(we’ll see how I do on the exams ahhh)

Would there be anything I could do now to increase my chances? I’m very ambitious but also pessimistic with a lot of regrets :frowning: especially with my GPA and current scores. I got a B in CP chem sophomore year…

edit: 16 AP & honor classes (I miscalculated sorry!) and 3.96 unweighted

You are a competitive applicant. Your stats are good and your ECs are solid. Retake the SAT and try getting a 1450+ and get 700s+ on SAT subject tests. Write great essays and you could get accepted to UCLA or any similar school

Please do the describes I need them.

You need to calculate your UC GPA. Having regrets about your GPA is ridiculous it’s practically perfect. Are you a Ca resident? Make sure you add safeties. A lot of people are being shut out this year and a lot of the “rejected from all colleges” threads happen to be from people expecting to go to a UC.

The calculated GPA is my UC GPA, and I am a California resident. Thank you so much for your feedback!!

I think your GPA will hurt you for the UCLA Nursing program but the rest of your application looks competitive. With a very low acceptance rate, UCLA is definitely not a Match school but worth an application. Make sure you apply widely to Nursing programs and include a few out of state options also.

For 2017, UCLA had 2697 applicants for the Nursing program and accepted 54 which is a 2% acceptance rate.

As stated before, definitely raise your SAT score as high as you possibly can and preferably over 1550 considering the School of Nursing is extremely competitive. I’m just curious: what is your SAT Essay score? Definitely, take those 2 subject tests. 3 would help even more so try to do so if possible but if not, 2 should suffice.

Both your UW and W GPA are extremely high and your definitely good on that part. Just make sure to at least maintain that GPA. If there was any specific reason or problem that caused you to get a B in any class, definitely explain that in the application when you apply (such as the B in CP Chem if there was any problem). Otherwise, your courseload is nearly impeccable.

You have done a lot of volunteering which is extremely impressive. Possibly get that hour count to 200+ hours if possible. (Just curious: does having a job count as volunteer hours? I don’t think so, right?)

You’ve got some good extracurriculars and have leadership positions in them. One thing you should make sure to do that makes you a unique applicant and is what colleges are actually looking for is to carry our activities or exhibit leadership by doing something which is easier to do when you have a leadership position in a club. Colleges aren’t necessarily looking to see if you have multiple leadership positions (though that is definitely beneficial to just have a leadership position) but they want to know what you did that exhibited your leadership positions. For example, take your HOSA chapter to competitions, expand the club in any way possible, et cetera. It’s very important that you take initiative and do stuff like this and to make sure that all those things are communicated effectively and in an impressive fashion on the application.

All that other stuff that you’ve done is really impressive! How did you get the time to do all of this??? Also make sure you get at least 3s on your AP tests because when you send your AP Scores to universities, you can’t pick and choose which ones you send. So make sure you don’t do badly on them. That’s great that you took almost all the most difficult courses that your school has offered throughout high school because that matters a lot to colleges.

Another thing you can do to raise your chances is to write exceptional essays so definitely get them started the summer before you apply for colleges and spend a lot of time on them because those are very important to colleges.

IMPORTANT: I have said so much and have suggested you do SO MANY other things on top of what you have done so far but know that you don’t have to do all of this. Doing everything I said on top of what you are already doing will probably be extremely stressful and really bad for your health and you have to remember that in the grand scheme of things nothing (including getting into your dream university/program) is worth the sacrifice of your health. So definitely considering what you are sacrificing to do what you have been doing so far and to do anything that I have suggested you do on top of that. I recommend you do that and see what you can do that I and the rest of the people that have commented on your thread have suggested and add as much as you can without sacrificing your health and life and relationships (familial, romantic, and friendly). Everything you’ve already done and have planned on doing already makes you a competitive applicant and if UCLA doesn’t accept you, they really don’t deserve you. You can go and exhibit your talents and strong work ethic as a student at another university and become a successful member of the medical field and achieve all your dreams. Remeber to keep that in mind at all times. I’m sure you’re already aware of that I just want to make sure that you do and that you especially think about that when thinking about what else you can do to improve your chances to get into UCLA Nursing.

BTW I am still a high school student as well and have not gone through the application process as well so that may give me less credibility. I just wanted to let you know about that. Every suggestion I have given above is based on the knowledge I have accumulated through talking to other people that have and what they have suggested to me, through some research, and a bit of it is just my personal opinion and advice on what you should do based on what I would do.

Anyways sorry for the length of this comment. It’s long as heck. Hopefully, I helped at least a little bit. If you have any other questions or want any other advice just respond to this comment. I’ll be more than happy to help!

edit #2- B in APUSH NOT CP chem… however, hopefully I will perform well on the AP exam
