I happened to be driving through Hanover over the weekend so I stopped at Dartmouth and drove around a bit. It is the most beautiful school i've ever seen, and I love everything about it. DOC, the D-Plan, the location, the focus on the outdoors, the traditions... everything is just incredible!! The only issue is, I am DEFINITELY not ivy-material. Not even close.

I want to study communications (PR) but since dartmouth doesnt have a comm dept, i would be happy to study any other humanities based major (english, sociology, govt, etc)

I have a pretty solid list of schools, but I would appreciate any suggestions of schools that are very similar to Dartmouth, but a little less selective.

Here's my current list for a better understanding of what I'm in to...

UNC Chapel Hill (reach)
U of Michigan (reach)
Boston University (target/a bit of a reach, but i've expressed a ton of interest and i have legacy)
Syracuse (newhouse school of public communication)
University of Maryland (target school)
University of Delaware (safety)
NC State (safety)
American University (target school)
Elon (target school)

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!!!

It sounds like you have a pretty good list already. I agree with Dcu that Middlebury would be the kind of school you are looking for, but that it would be a significant reach. The same goes for Williams, which would be even more of a reach than Middlebury.

I’ve never been to Colgate or Hamilton, but they are frequently mentioned as somewhat less-selective schools for those who like the Dartmouth atmosphere. Other solid, outdoorsy places you might take a look at include U VM and Colorado College. Possibly Colby.

Not quite sure if you’re really looking for the Dartmouth-type school, or just loved how beautiful it is. Your list is mostly large universities, and Dartmouth-like LAC’s are VERY different. Maybe another but smaller university would be more of what you’re looking for? check out schools that have a good communications department and a small, pretty campus!

Yes, Hamilton is extremely like Dartmouth and so is Colby. Perhaps Bucknell? They have similar architecture.

OP, how do you feel about small schools vs. big schools? Every other school on your list is considerably bigger than Dartmouth. If you liked that feel, I might switch out some schools.

What are you stats so you can get some more directed recommendations?
