What is confusing is the fact that you're supposed to give the form to an examiner for him/her to sign and then deliver it to the registrar's office.

Can a student who's not local ask the examiner to take it to the registrar's office if transfer credit is approved? Otherwise, how does the form get to the registrar's office?

Unless your son doesn’t plan to visit the registrar’s office through all 4 years of college, you should be fine if you bring it in once school starts.

My read would be that the form must be delivered to the registrar’s office in order to receive credit, but that the form doesn’t need to be delivered by the July deadline.

There is no official placement. You take whatever class you want. For example, you won’t get rejected for 8.02 if you didn’t prove that you’ve taken 8.01 somewhere else. So you can turn in the transfer credit whenever you want.

There should be a page with special instructions for incoming freshman somewhere. I got math transfer credit before I arrived, and what I did was first e-mail the appropriate examiner, and then I sent a packet with all the required information (copy of textbook index, syllabus, request form, etc.) to an address that you should be able to find on the MIT 2016 page (look on that page primarily - not the general MIT pages, as those are more designed for continuing students). I kept in touch with the examine throughout the process and received updates when my information was received, approved, etc.

No, you don’t have to do it right away - but, depending on the college the credit is from, and the design of the class, you may or may nor receive credit (I received credit for some but not all of my math courses). I would be sure to do it over the summer so that your son can plan accordingly. Also, I was lazy and only transferred some credit over the summer and missed out on sophomore status because of it, so sooner is better.

EDIT: Here is the appropriate contact information. You can e-mail them for the best information and that is the address to send stuff to.
