Sorry, I know this is like all that is on this board, but I’m curious.

3.5 GPA (Much higher when weighted, but I’m not sure of the exact figure)
13% in class (like 38/300 students or something… too many smart kids in my class :-/)
All Honors classes, except 1 AP junior year, 3 senior year
Got a 5 on AP psyc test
2160 SAT1 (new test) / 1330 SAT1 (old test)
690 CW (from old test)
720 M (from new test)
760 W (from new test)

B’s and A’s freshman/ sophore year
All A’s junior year (except 2 B’s mixed in)
All A’s first term of senior year
Great (I’m hoping, may be goood) essays
Great recs for sure

Thanks for your time guys, any comments are welcome.

Applying to engineering makes all the difference.....those students' GPAs and test scores are much higher than those of students admitted for other majors. It depends on which engineering program you're looking at, but we know an engineering student who was val in his class - top grades and scores - who was waitlisted, but did eventually get in.

Just got my report card... That makes it straight A's ( 5 A-'s, 6 A's , 1 A+) for my first two terms of senior year on the following schedule :

AP Physics
AP Calculus
AP Computer Structures
Honors Brit Lit
Honors Spanish 1 *
Honors Vietnam / America in the T.V. Age **

*they cancelled Italain 4 the year I was scheduled to take it, so I had to take a freshman class :-(, but I'm doing well in it, so I think thats all that should matter

** Basically just the standard senior history class at my high school

I'm hoping this should help my chances... especially since im getting such good grades in physics and math (since I'm applying to the engineering college)

Also, it secures the fact that my grades have been on the incline. My low GPA is due to sophmore and freshman year... Mostly B's with some A's and a C+. However, since junior year, I've gotten straight A's 4/6 terms... or rather 34 A's out of 36 total letter grades (only 2 B's mixed in junior year).

So ya, I'm hoping this will help me out big time since my GPA is kinda low...anybody have any thoughts on this? Agreeing/disagreeing?

Thanks again!

P.S. please note that when I say A's in general...this refers to A-'s and A+'s as well. My HS considers straight A's to be nothing below an A-, so I am just going with them on this one.

Also, in addition to what you think my chances are after considering mid-term grades, (kinda off topic, but not worth another thread) people who have gotten in...what was you're GPA? and how would you rate the difficulty of your course load?

No, sadly that's the one thing I never had a chance to do. I was so busy during the time that I had planned all my college visits that stuff just got plugged up and I didnt make it. But from what I've heard from first-hand accounts / read/ seen, it seems perfect for me. Also, if I do get acccepted, I will certainly visit to make sure that it is right for me.

Do you think it could hurt my chances to the point of not getting in because I didn't visit?

Also, Thanks waleedk for the input...I sure hope you're right.

Where do you live? If it is fairly far from the college they will understand as long as you have shown interest in other ways. Filled out interest forms, etc. Schools such as Bucknell like to see interest, especially a student of your caliber. They may think you are looking at the school as a safety. Even though this is a very good school. You have a great chance and it is a great school!

you are basically in. As long as your recs are good and your essay is solid. I got in (with a likely letter) and I had a C and D my freshman year of HS. Is your HS uber competative or not so competative? if it's really tough your in almost no question, if it's not then a little less secure.

I'm pretty sure my recs are really good, and my essay is atleast good. The only thing I worry about is my Math SAT 2 scores (650, 640 , but i did get 720 on SAT 1s: since I'm applying to engineering, they dont look that hot i think) and my ECs, which aren't horrible...but they aren't the best. Also, my class rank isnt that high, its not top 10%, more like 13% or so. Maybe Im just being overly hard on myself tho.

I dont know if my school is competitive, I have no way to compare it to anything. I mean an A isnt really that hard to get, but then again thats coming from the kid who is taking 3 APs and got a 2160 on his SATs...so I really dont have much of a way to judge it. It is just a public school, so Im sure its not as like tough or prestigious as the private schools that are around.

Tape, my son is interested in Bucknell. What other schools have you applied to? We are from Virginia, and he is interested in UVa., Richmond, and Bucknell as of now, but just beginning his search.

Im looking to major in engineering, so that was a big factor in my decision. My number one school would be Cornell...but I have pretty much no chance...and Bucknell seems to be just as great. Lehigh is also pretty nice from what I hear. Good engineering department and beautiful campus, its in northern PA. The other schools I applied to are syracuse, villanova, fairfield and Umass Amherst(Safety). Im not big on villanova or fairfield really, the religious school thing just isn't really me, but they seem to have good departments. Syracuse is probably 4th on my list, but I don't want to go there nearly as much as Bucknell or Lehigh, but again, they do seem to have a good engineering school.

So ya, if I had to just give a quick rec on what schools he should check out, I would probably just say Lehigh and Syracuse. If you and your family are religious at all (and dont mind a VERY annoying application) check out villanova as well.

Again this is coming from a student who: wanted a mid-size school, a non-urban campus, New England / PA area (didn't look in virginia or maryland or anything around that area really), equal ratio of guys to girls (meaning not like a tech school), and a great engineering departement.

Hi Tapeduey
I, too , am baffled why you were unable to visit Bucknell, because this is one glaring gap in your application.

It is a beautiful school. We attended the fall open house, along with 100's and 100's of other applicants and parents. Just so happened it was one of those gorgeous, crystal clear, deep blue sky days, and the campus was vibrant with activity. You missed a wonderful experience and excellent Open House, with compelling student and faculty presentations.

My son attended a Bucknell counseling workshop last summer and he received a notebook with pertinent information about the "college process". One of the studies in that packet was about college visits, and a true indication of seriousness about a first choice school is a college visit.

So not visiting a place you may spend the next four years, and (potentially a lot of money) is a bit glaring especially if you live within four hour radius from the school.
Where do you live ?
