you have to apply during your second year. you can’t enter honors program for pharmacy in your first year

@andyle

Same here. I got the James Dickinson Carr for SAS and SEBS but only a $3500 Scarlet scholarship for the pharmacy school. Kind of disappointing…

But anyway what did everyone else get in terms of scholarship money? Anybody get more than a Scarlet?

Also, if you end up transferring out of pharmacy program to say SAS or somewhere, can you redeem the scholarship you originally were granted for SAS?

I got the 10000 Carr scholarship for pharmacy.

@sporty04
they send a email out to qualified people at end of first to second year.

Questions about Rutgers Pharm:

What would you say are the best and worst aspects of going to Rutgers?

How hard is it for OOS students to adjust? Do Rutgers students seem to be welcoming? Or do NJ residents tend to stay in groups/cliques formed from high school.

What is the job outlook with a degree from Rutgers pharm? specifically for hospital pharmacy?

Which would you say has the better 0-6 program for pharmacy: Northeastern, Rutgers or URI. Why? (Even though I know this thread is pretty biased. :P)

Thanks in advance.

What would you say are the best and worst aspects of going to Rutgers?
Best: classmates and friends.
Worst: Buses, Parking Gestapo, Class Sizes which make professors not give a crap (pharm classes are better)…registration.

Not hard at all to get integrated into the community. Freshmen dorms are always highly social. I’m assuming ull be a freshman. But for rutgers pharm, transfers tend to stay together in their own clique.

What is the job outlook with a degree from Rutgers pharm? specifically for hospital pharmacy?

The job market is tough right now for hospital. Mostly only retail chains are hiring. A lot of people who graduate want to go into hospital but end up at CVS/Walgreens. I work at CVS and one of the floaters who just graduated said he had a 3.7GPA and was an intern at CVS wanted to go to a hospital but he said hospitals in NJ/NYC/Philly area weren’t hiring period even rejecting some of their own pharm techs who graduated. This is hearsay though from a coupla floaters (substitute pharmacists) at CVS.

To be honest I think getting a pharmD basically guarantees you a job no matter where you graduate from. However, if you’re looking to get into industry I would highly suggest rutgers because of the close relationship rutgers has with the pharmaceutical industry in NJ.

Thanks in advance.

Well with this economy, PGY-1 is pretty much required even for staffing positions in hospital. GPA isn’t really important in the hiring process either (3.0+)

Wow, thank you so much for the responses! They are really helpful!

The reason I asked about job outlook for hospital pharmacists with a Rutgers pharmD degree is because at NEU, the have the coop program, where I would probably have the opportunity to work in a hospital setting. So I was wondering if students at NEU have an advantage in obtaining jobs because of the additional experience.

A few other questions:

What are the available internships like around Rutgers? Are they all mostly in retail and are students usually competing for the same ones?

How often do pharm students interact with non-pharm students?

Where do most pharm students usually dorm? Do most students usually end up getting their first dorm choice?

If I can only AP out of one course (and it’s pretty much the general consensus that AP-ing out of Bio is the way to go), should I even bother with the money to take the AP Chem or AP Stats exam at the end of the year?

(Random question) Do students get free tickets to football games at Rutgers?

Thanks again!

A PharmD from RU vs. a PharmD from NEU doesn’t matter when you’re looking for a job. I’d just go with whichever school is the cheaper one to attend, to be honest.

Most people are interns with retail pharmacies, but you can apply to internships at pharmaceutical companies like Novo Nordisk. There are also people who have interned at places like Johns Hopkins Hospital over the summer (so if you can travel, places like that are an option).

Most interaction with non-pharmacy students is during the first two years, since you still have classes with the rest of the university at that point. It probably depends on people – I just happen to have some good friends who are engineering students, so I hang out with them a lot. Others hang out more with fellow pharmacy students.

Most pharmacy students are on Busch (during freshman year, there are also a good amount of people on Livingston). Whether you get your first dorm choice depends on how early you signed up for housing. The people who are late are the ones who tend to end up on Livingston – some people even ended up on Douglass.

I’d say that AP Chem is up to you, unless you’re really set on AP-ing out of bio. In that case, don’t bother. I’d say definitely no to AP Stat, since you have the bio credit.

Going to leave the football question to someone else because I’m not an athletics person at all/tend to delete all of the athletics emails…but I believe that some tickets do come free. I’m just not sure about all of them.

Thank you thank you thank you mizuiro!

Is a GPA of 3.3 in highschool good enough to get into Rutgers Pharmacy?

I heard that colleges only see your GPA up til junior year and before senior year is over you would already know if you got accepted or not and then they see your overall GPA

Does that essentially mean in senior year I can slack off as long as I take my AP exams and not fail any classes?

I am RU student in my second year considering to go to RU pharmacy school. I have taken some Pharmacy requirement classes. In order to do a 2+4 I should have completed 75 credits by the end of spring 2011. But I would not be able to complete 75 credits by the end of this spring. So can I still apply next year and do a 3+4 completing the required courses?

yeah u can one of my friends who also transferred in with me within Rutgers last semester was also a 3rd year. But i think u might have to take the PCATs, something that he had to do.

hey, i applied to ru pharmacy in the beginning of nov. my status was in progress until last night. i was waitlisted, will i still find out by the jan 31 deadline?

^same as above…
I just checked my application status a few minutes ago and it said that I’m waitlisted. Except it said “waitlisted” today (because I check everyday).
What are my chances of getting in now? And is there anything else I can do? T-T
Thanks in advance!

if you’re waitlisted, that’s it. you either wait until after may when most waitlists start getting chosen, if at all, or look at other schools.

i have a question regarding scheduling. I was wondering what is your schedule like in the pharmD program? Do you have a lot of classes perhaps 3 days of the week, or just a few all 5 days? Are they flexible with this?

I am planning on attending in the Fall 2011, but will be commuting so it’d be nice to know how this all works from someone who has experienced it :)

I noticed on the Ernest Mario website it lists the curriculum for all 6 years and it mentions summer work. Does everyone have to take these classes during the summer? If I am out of state does this mean I will not be able to go home over the summer because I have to stay at Rutgers and take more pharmacy courses?

I’m a junior in high school. Do I have any chance getting into the program?

@gabby64 the first 2 yrs u can set ur own schedule so u can choose the times u want for the available during those periods. My first two year i was able to make my schedule so i got either monday or friday off. And about how many classes you would take a day, it also varies but generally about 3 or so

@martman1210 those summer courses are your pharmacy rotations so they r mandatory but u can request to have these rotations in an area near ur home.
