Answers to Chapman U Admission and Acceptances decisions

I put together here in one place useful information that answers questions regarding Chapman University Admission and Acceptances decisions gleamed from the Chapman Admission tubular site that have been posted over the past month. They answer a lot of questions that continually come up year after year on this Chapman College Confidential Forum:

Chapman admissions evaluate holistically so keep in mind that your GPA and test scores are one part of a comprehensive evaluation. Our averages from last year’s admitted class was a 27-28 on the ACT and 3.75 weighted GPA. Again, Chapman admits below and deny above those averages as we are looking holistically and for overall fit.

What was the average SAT score for last year’s admitted class: 1877 was the average SAT superscore for admitted freshman.

ACT or SAT scores more important: Chapman uses your highest overall - we don’t prefer one over the other. We use them equally. You will need to have your test scores submitted by the Nov. 1 deadline.

What grades will be considered if applying for EA (Early Admission): Your grades through the end of your junior year. We’ll also review what you’re enrolled in for your senior year and sometimes receive progress-grades for the first part of your senior year - this typically depends on your high school.

Acceptance rates for Chapman U and for Dodge College: Film Production is by far the most selective and competitive with an acceptance rate between 10-15%. Other academic majors within Dodge College are competitive with an average SAT score around 1920 and 3.7 GPA. Acceptance rates for those programs vary but are below the university average of 47% acceptance for incoming freshmen. Keep in mind, that if you’re interested in Film Production you must apply and be admitted directly into that program. It’s nearly impossible to transfer into that particular program once at Chapman or even within Dodge College.

How will Junior College courses taken over the summer effect GPA: You’d need to submit official transcripts from the community college(s) and if they are core curriculum courses or courses that would prepare you for your academic major we would calculate them into our GPA. Even if they don’t count in, we’d review them and note that you’d taken them as a part of our academic review. Remember, you GPA isn’t everything - the rigor of your curriculum is equally important! As are all the other elements in your application as a part of our holistic review.

Does Chapman Admission take in to an account a GPA which is not very high because you attended a very rigorous and academically hard high school: Absolutely. Chapman admission counselors are territory-driven so that we can get well acquainted with the area and high schools in our territory to evaluate applicants on the environment and rigor of your high school. Similarly, your high school counselor will submit a School Report on your behalf that provides us with a high school profile including courses available and level of rigor offered.

Dodge College and EA (Early Action) applications are both due on the same date, November 1: Chapman does not have Early Decision, but instead they have Early Action (which is non-binding).Regarding Film Production…the deadline is November 1. All applications received by Nov. 1 for that program are considered on-time and will be reviewed by application date vs. decision plan of early or regular decision. You can select either decision plan, but be sure to submit your Common Application and Portfolio via SlideRoom by Nov. 1.

When do Chapman EA applicants hear back from Chapman: EA applicants (with the exception of Film Production, Pharmacy, Screen Acting and Theatre Performance) will receive an admission decision in late December. For the exception programs in the parentheses above - those programs receive a decision in February.

When do students apply for a minor: Students can declare a minor any point in time after being admitted to the university. Some majors however, that have a talent/application process can’t be applied for until the spring of your freshman year.

New EA application questions: A new question for Freshman applicants about our commitment to diversity and inclusion – “The ‘I Am Chapman’ campaign on our campus was created to foster an appreciation and awareness of diversity, inclusion, equity and social justice for all. We celebrate our students’ individuality in all of its forms including their race, ethnicity, interests, ability, geographic background, experiences, culture, religion and opinions. Given the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of our community, the admission committee would like to know what makes you ‘Chapman?’ (200 words or fewer)” and - New questions about visiting campus and corresponding with our admission counselors to show how you’ve connected with Chapman

Transfer Students: The 60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) simply refer to completed semester college units showing on a college transcript. The units do not all need to be transferable, just completed at a college or university.

Applicant has taken 2 years of foreign language instead of the Chapman’s recommendation of 3-4 years of a language: Chapman evaluates candidates for admission based upon a holistic review, which means that your foreign language courses are just one area of many we’d review you for admission. The reason why Chapman recommends 3-4 years of a language is because to graduate from Chapman you must complete a foreign language at the 200-level. It’s much easier for students to complete that when a language is fresh in their mind and language vocabulary. Similarly, part of our mission at Chapman is to develop global citizens - which is why Chapman strives to empower students to communicate in another language.

Every College course is articulated individually. Use the “Search Transfer Course Approvals” to look up the college you took the course at and see if someone has taken the course previously. If it’s listed there - you’ll be able to see how it articulates/transfers in to Chapman:

How easy is it to change majors at Chapman University once you are admitted: In general - about 90% of our academic majors are flexible with movement between majors. Where it becomes more difficult to switch between are with any of our talent-based programs - Theatre, Art, Dance, Music & Dodge College of Film & Media Arts. Any of those areas are much more difficult to move into or even move between programs within the college. Transferring into Film Production for instance, is a slim to none chance. It just doesn’t happen, even for students currently studying within Dodge College in a different major.

Are letters of recommendation due at the same time as the application if I decide to do Chapman Early Action: Yes, everything must be turned in at the same time.

Chapman University offers ‘fellows interviews’ to prospective high school seniors. These interviews can be either on campus, over the phone or over Skype. These interviews allow a more personalized application experience. This gives you an opportunity to show off your personality and be more than just a name on a piece of paper.

Interviews for High School Seniors

Fellows Interviews: On-Campus, Phone or Skype

Fall 2016 applicants can sign up for a Fellows Interview here:

https://chapmanund.askadmissions.net/Portal/EI/GroupUrl?gid=530459fbe1c4fb64b04c8c95308cb0cd16fa18

Fellows Interview Offerings for Fall 2016 Applicants:

• September 8, 2015: Fellows Interviews begin

• November 20, 2015: Last day for Early Action applicants to complete a Fellows Interview

• December 11, 2015: Last day of Fellows Interviews for 2015

• January 29, 2016: Last day for Regular Decision applicants to complete a Fellows Interview

Chapman’s Admission Fellows Program provides prospective students with the opportunity to meet with current Chapman student leaders for an informational and evaluative conversation. Fellows are also available to answer questions about the Chapman community from the interviewee or their parents. The interview is used by the admission committee as an additional aid in the application review process.

To qualify for an interview, a student must be a current high school senior and seriously considering applying to Chapman University, or have already submitted an application for the following academic year. A few of the benefits of interviewing with an Admission Fellow:

• Provides a more personalized application experience
• Helps demonstrate the prospective student’s personality and passions to the admission committee
• Allows prospective students to explore the current student perspective on a more intimate and detailed level
• Introduces a Chapman student contact for the prospective students to keep in touch with throughout the application process

Interviews conducted by our Admission Fellows are available upon request, and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will offer interviews both on campus and over the phone. We also offer interviews during Discover Chapman Day. Fellows Interviews will begin for high school seniors in September and be offered through January.

*Chapman considers admission interviews to be OPTIONAL, and students who are unable or who choose not to interview are still welcome and encouraged to apply, and will be given the same consideration.

At a fellows interview can the prospective student bring their resume, transcript etc? Will it be accepted?: Because these are all things that will be turned in with the application you do not need to bring these to the fellows interview.

How is a chapman interview conducted? Are questions asked to the person being interviewed, or is it more of a causal question and answer like setting?: It is conducted and treated as an interview. Questions will be asked of the interviewee. However, if you have questions, your interviewer can certainly answer those for you. Fellows interviews (conducted by an admission fellow & offered on our website) are a bit more of a two-way dialogue during the interview than a regional interview with an admission representative. Either way, look at it as an opportunity to share who you are, your goals, and what you’re seeking in a college/university path.

Chapman U admissions process is need-blind. They do not download the FAFSA information until after the point of admission.

From the Chapman Admissions Tumbler site today:

Does Chapman require a CSS profile for financial aid? Chapman only requests/advises students to fill out the FAFSA; we do not require the CSS profile.

Background notes:

Need-blind denotes a college admissions policy in which applicants are judged solely on their merits, irrespective of their ability to pay for tuition.

The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (often written as CSS PROFILE), short for the College Scholarship Service Profile, is an application distributed by the College Board in the United States allowing college students to apply for financial aid. It is primarily designed to give private member institutions of the College Board a closer look into the finances of a student and family. It is much more detailed than the FAFSA.

ACT Submissions Question and answer from Chapman Admissions Tumbler website from today:

I’m taking the ACT on October 24th, and am applying to Dodge College for Film Production, which has a November 1st deadline. It can take between 2 and 8 weeks for ACT scores to be sent to colleges. Is it possible to submit all other parts of the application by November 1st, and let admissions know the ACT will be submitted soon?

Chapman University requires all test scores as a part of your application, so be sure to submit your previous scores prior to the deadline. Also, be sure to list on your application your Oct. 24th test date so we’re aware those scores are on their way. Be sure to indicate on your ACT exam that when the scores are released you’d like those to be sent directly to Chapman University. It will shave down on any lag time.

If this is your first standardized test sitting then yes, you can apply by Nov. 1, indicate your test date on your application and we’ll await the arrival of your scores and review you for admission after the official scores arrive.

Found on the Chapman U Admissions tumbler website this week:

Will applying for early action fall 2016 or normal fall 2016 make any difference to my chances of being accepted?

Our review process is the same whether you apply Early Action or Regular Decision. However, some programs such as Film Production, Pharmacy, Screen Acting and Theatre Performance require or have a priority deadline of Nov. 1.

Early Action does have benefits: we have more time with your application (only about 1/3 of applicants typically choose to apply at that time), there’s more we can do with your application (accept, deny or roll your application to the regular pool) and you get a decision early - mid-December. It also shows initiative when we receive a well-crafted application in Early Action - we do factor that initiative into part of our review process.
