Freshmen SAT results for Dodge School at Chapman

Does anyone know the Freshmen SAT or ACT results for Dodge School at Chapman University? The Dodge Quick Facts say the average SATs are 1940. Anyone have any more detail, such as the 25% and 75% for SAT CR/M/W? Or the same for the ACTs? I understand that they are somewhat higher than the overall Chapman results, which are easy to find.

Not sure if there is an official place to find this info, but to get an idea, you can search currently active Chapman threads here on CC where students accepted early have posted their stats and majors. I can only tell you about my D, recently accepted for film production at Dodge, whose SAT score was 2210. She didn’t take the ACT. I do think the test scores and GPAs of students accepted to Dodge are generally higher than those of Chapman’s general population. Dodge is very competitive and can afford to be more selective.

I would think that Dodge acceptances are talent based rather that SAT score based

And because they have sooooo many talented applicants, they pick the ones with the higher test scores and GPAs, see.

I went to Preview Day at Dodge College on 3-21-12.

They handed out a flyer that stated the 2012 Freshman Class Statistics for Dodge College as follows:

Average GPA of admitted students: 3.71

Average SAT of admitted students: 1945

If you use a SAT to ACT conversion chart such as the one at:

[ACT to SAT Score Conversion Table | InLikeMe](http://www.inlikeme.com/test/act-sat-score-conversion-table.html)

a 1945 SAT converts to a 29.5 ACT score

I communicated with the Dodge College & the Chapman Admissions Office this week and asked them if the 3.71 GPA in my previous post above was weighted or unweighted?

(Note: weighted is using a 5.0 max GPA system given an extra GPA point for an AP and honor class)

They said that the 3.71 GPA is unweighted. That is very impressive and shows the high academic standards that Chapman U is able to command from their admittees.

Note: Also on the Chapman U website the same 3.71 GPA appears for the 2011 year:

[Undergraduate Admission FAQs | Chapman University](<a href=“Page Not Found | Chapman University”>Undergraduate Frequently Asked Questions | Dodge College | Chapman University) states the following:

“What are the average SAT and GPA scores for admitted students?
For fall of 2011, our average freshman GPA was 3.71 and average SAT was 1940. We highly value the academic aptitude of each applicant and weigh these academic measures into our evaluation of every file in addition to your other department application materials.”

I received communications today from both Chapman U and Dodge College stating that all GPAs are weighted. The two lower level Dodge College office personals staff apologized for originally passing on to me incorrect information regarding their GPAs being unweighted. Dodge College’s GPA is weighted on a 5.0 scale, which is calculated by the Office of Admissions.

If a student’s high school GPA is not on the 5.0 scale, the Office of Admissions takes into account the classes on the student’s transcript and recalculates it to fit their 5.0 scale.

What peaked my interest in this question besides being to correctly inform high school students regarding the difficulty of being accepted at Dodge College & Chapman U originally was the coincidence of the weighted 3.71 GPA for Main campus 2011 (see below) and Dodge College unweighted 3.71 for 2012 admitted students (both having 3.71 GPA values). Dodge College told me in their communication today that it is coincidental that Dodge College’s GPA and the University’s GPA are the exact same.

Using weighted GPAs is common at most Universities in the USA. In previous posts I have stated: When Universities state the average GPA of their admits on their websites we do not know if it is weighted or unweighted GPA. I think that many/most state the weighted GPA to show that they that they are selective, top notch and have very smart students in their freshman class. Thus if they have admitted you, you and your parents should feel good about you (as their child) and this fine University that they are about to pour a lot of money into.

Thank you Sukahjoy. That is very helpful information. Thanks for your time and research.

Just to clarify, I believe the average SAT score of 1940 for the fall of 2011 is for Dodge, not Chapman overall. Right?

One point that confuses me is that the average GPAs for Dodge and Chapman are the same, but it appears that the average SATs are significantly higher for Dodge. I haven’t seen the average Chapman SAT results but the middle 50% for the fall of 2011 are as follows.

Mathematics 560-660
Critical Reading 550-650
Writing 570-660

Based on this it looks like the overall Chapman SAT average would be roughly 1825. So the average GPAs are the same, but the average Dodge SAT is 1940 and the average Chapman SAT is 1825. Is my analysis correct? Why such a large difference in SAT results yet the same GPAs?

The information in the quote below and above in my previous post from the Chapman U website is for all of Chapman University; SAT average was 1940.

“For fall of 2011, our average freshman GPA was 3.71 and average SAT was 1940. We highly value the academic aptitude of each applicant and weigh these academic measures into our evaluation of every file in addition to your other department application materials”

The SAT shown for the average admitted student at Dodge College on the 2012 Preview Day handout was 1945. I hope this clarifies this for you Cape7674.

The Statements below were replies I received from a Chapman U Admission Officer at Chapman University regarding inquires by me on this subject. These responses may be of help to all on this subject. I was very impress with the forthcomingness and professionalism of this Admission officer as well as every Professor and Administrator that I have come in contact with so far at Chapman University:

“GPA is only one aspect to the academic evaluation. So while Dodge College does have high standards of academics (as evidenced by the GPA and SAT/ACT scores), it isn’t inherently more academically selective than other majors at Chapman University (although it can be). Dodge College looks to admit students who they feel will do well in their program, which takes into account not only academics but also the qualitative aspects of the application.”

Also:

“Our Dodge College boasts some of the more competitive majors on our campus and while it wouldn’t be untrue to say the Dodge Admission committee holds their applicants to a high academic standard, it doesn’t give justice to the very qualitative nature of admissions into ‘talent’ based majors such as Film Production, Screenwriting, Creative Producing, etc.”
