What are the best grad schools for these studies? Can someone provide a rankings?

lonefreckle... what area in anthro/archaeology are you interested in? Its a pretty wide discipline.

im interested in a social anthro, biological anthro, and archeology. kind of everything

lonefreckle, you're a freshman, right? It's way too early to be thinking about grad school. Grad school is pretty specific- TAMU is #1 for underwater archaeology, for example. Take some classes and find out where your interests lie.

yep i mostly wanted to get the sense of where the best anthro was

Does anyone know about archaeology specifically?

What type of archaeology?

Greco-Roman, maybe celtic

archaeology isn't necessarily categorized as paleontology...it's grouped together with anthropology. And the only rankings l know of are here:http://www.hanover.edu/soc/gradrepa.html

But also, these are old, and generalized rankings...ask profs, they know which programs offer the best specialized research you are looking for.

Rabo - for Classical Archaeology, Cincinnati seems to be improving every time I look at their website - they've just snagged Steven Ellis (Porta Stabia project) from Michigan, so they'll have some of the only "new" excavation going at Pompeii for years to come. He's new himself (PhD 2005) and good!

They've also added Eleni Hatzaki from the British School at Athens for Aegean Prehistory.

Since I'm interested in Campania, Ellis alone raised UC to the top of my list. (I also went to HS near Cincinnati, so I'm comfortable with the area - which helps, even at my age!)

Also - some schools put Classical Archaeology in the Art History departments (e.g. UVa and WUStL) though there will usually be links from the Classics department's web page.

Anyone know about visual anthro? Visual sociology I guess hits my main interests as well. I know USC has had this focus for the longest time, but where are the other big ones, and who is doing serious research in the field? I know that Harvard and Oxford now have specific programs, but I am not sure about many others. Any thoughts anthro people? Anyone applying to or already studying in this or a related field?
