My daughter is weighing options that hopefully offer (a premier?) program in archeology. WashU is a reach, GeoWashU is a possibility, and maybe SMU.
Ideally, we’d like to find something that she can get some merit aid along with a nice program.
We’re in Louisiana, so of course, the further South is dad’s desire. As of this moment her WGPA is 4.6, ACT 32.
Thoughts appreciated!
Tulane’s archaeology offerings are extremely good if she wants to stick close to home, especially if she’s interested in Mesoamerican archaeology. Their Classics program isn’t too shabby either. Tulane is quite selective these days, though.
I have a friend finishing a PhD in archaeology at Alabama. It’s not a traditional powerhouse in archaeology, but it’s an up-and-coming department with some great people on faculty. The same goes for U Arkansas, which is carving out a niche for itself in geospatial research. Both offer merit aid to high-scoring out-of-state applicants. With her stats, she’s competitive for merit aid that would at least cover the difference between OOS and in-state tuition.
All of the colleges you’re considering (Wash U, SMU, GWU) are terrific for archaeology, as you’ve no doubt realized.
