Anybody here doing bio who is not pre-med. Its so frustrating to go to a school where everyone you meet wants to become a doctor. Anybody here actually majoring in Biology because they love the subject.

Are you going to teach?

I don't know, but I know I want to pursue some sort of PHD program in the future

I dislike pre-med too! I think pre-med should be its own major. :) That's why I plan to major in Natural Sciences at Johns Hopkins (if I go there) instead of biology. I want to become an ecologist. Most of the other schools that I really like (UNC & Chicago especially) have great biology/ecology programs. I tried to avoid pre-med factories. Did you know that over 75% of WUStL's biology majors are pre-med?!!

I agree. I am interested in biology and environmental science, but I don't want to go to mecical school, either! I'lll probably go to an LAC, major in biology or environmental science, and find a job at which I won't make much money, but that I'll love.

I find it interesting that pre-med students can major in just about anything . That's why there is not a "pre-med" major!

Don't worry.

Most of the pre-meds grow up, wake up, realize there are other alternatives in life, and pursue them.

HEY! what's up with all the pre-med bashing!

I'm going to be a biology major next year because i LOVE biology..but yes, I will also be pursuing medicine after my 4 years in college. But, i would have been a biology major nevertheless. In my four undergrad years I hope to do research, research, and more research in biology.

I want to study biology for personal enlightenment...but my wanting to be a doctor has nothing to do with money...I'm sure some of you won't believe me...but I'm planning on practicing medicine some place where medical attention is needed (meaning outside of the US). so...not all ppl who major in biology who hope to become doctors do it just for med school...dont generalize us! neways, just wanted to clarify that

Pre-med majors don't work, because...what if you didn't get into medical school?

Cardinal 09- I think that's great! I never said people were pre-med for money, though. Good luck with your medical practice! :)

Amused- I'm sure you could do something else with a pre-med major; research is one option.

The point of the thread is that biology is such a huge field- microbiology, ecology, marine biology, toxicology, zoology, botany, paleobiology, env. science... Despite this vast field, though, many biology students are aiming for medical school. This ultimately results in biology programs structured around pre-med.

i would have to agree with you on that, warblersrule86...biology has become structured around pre-med in a lot of schools b/c many of the biology majors want to become doctors. but some schools have completely eliminated pre-med as a major so that this doesn't happen. for example, Stanford wants to take the pre-med focus off of biology so pre-med has been eliminated as an undergrad major and they discourage their students from taking biology just for med school. so...some schools have made progress; however, I agree, more work needs to be done.

Don't worry - so many freshmen come in as bio pre-meds, but their numbers drop dramatically after the first year (hell, even after the first semester). People realize "oh, there are other things to do besides medicine or law and wow! I actually like some of them"
hahaha so don't hate us pre-meds :) (at least those of us that are die-hard and are seeing it through)
