Any advice for new students/ parents?

My son will join the Wolfpack this fall ... any advice on orientation, dorms, restaurants, hotels? Anything ... thanks!

I have plenty of advice if you have specific questions. I could go on forever with the suggestions you’ve given. :)

OK …

Any thoughts on the honors dorm?

What restaurant is a - can’t miss?

Going to orientation in July. Anything we should know? We have hotel, etc.

Do the kids sign up for classes at orientation or before?

Do they hold sections of each class for each orientation session?

I can address a little bit of this based on my experience (as a freshman parent) in the last year.

What restaurant is a - can’t miss? The Flying Biscuit Cafe.

Orientation - I went, but really did not participate. I don’t think there is anything for the parents to learn that you would not already know from prior visits or from reading the web site. The program is really designed two separate events - one for parents and one for students. There about an hour intended as a joint session in an auditorium, which I did join, primarily as a means to catch up with my son. I actually spent two days in the library working.

Classes - S thought the sign up would take place during orientation, but noticed that classes were being assigned prior. Just check the mypack portal to see what is going on. During orientation, the schedule was finalized for the most part, but S was able to continue to make changes on his own the rest of the summer.

I never saw a section of a class during orientation.

Thanks and I meant do they hold sections of each class for each orientation session. Or is it first-come, first served all summer? Thanks again.

I thought giving students a chance to sit in class during orientation sounded odd, but gave it my best shot. Turns out I misunderstood. So I’ll give it another shot.

There was no indication that space in classes was held so that orientation sessions later in the summer would have a broader selection of classes. So, yes, first come first serve, combined with the class sections that were per-loaded prior to orientation. No changes could be made prior to orientation. The schedule that S came away with from orientation had all the needed classes, but was terrible from a schedule/logistical standpoint. He was able to work it out on his own by logging in everyday to see what adjustments could be made. Frustrating, but it all worked out.

Got it - thanks. That’s disappointing to hear. A lot of universities hold so many seats for his orientation group.
