Orientation

What exactly happens at orientation?

I’d really like to know the answer to this question too haha, btw are you bringing your parents?

You attend some different sessions - where they will talk about a variety of things. If you have read through the registration materials - you will know a lot of it. They go over what the gen ed requirements are, talk a little about study abroad, talk about housing, etc. Most sessions are together, but I believe there are one or two that are separate.

The most important thing is for you to get on Connect Carolina and find some classes that you want to take and put them in your shopping cart. Give yourself some choices in case classes are filled.

In one session - you will all go and register for classes. UNC holds some freshman classes for each orientation session and they will open up during this time. So - you want to be prepared. Have choices in your basket. Have your preferred schedule in your planner (I think that is what it is called) - anyway the area where you make the choice and enroll. When the window opens- hit enroll - and see what you get. If one or two or full - pull in one of your back ups from your shopping cart and try again.

You will stay the night with a roommate in a dorm. I think they had a dance or something that night for the kids.

Most kids had their parents with them - not all -but most.

There was a list that was stickied on what to take with you - but they also send a list.

Three of the nicer hotels in the area - but more expensive … The Carolina Inn right on campus, ALoft, and the Sienna Hotel on Franklin street. Your parents would stay there.

That old thread is at the top - “Some things you should know about Ctops.”

Also note - it is hot/ humid …the rooms are cool with AC, and wear shoes you can walk in.

I forgot this … but it’s also a good idea to find some time to go down and get your ID card. I think it was on the ground floor of the union if I remember correctly. Try to get down there first thing and knock this out. YOu will be glad you did. Also once your account is set up - go ahead and put some money in your “expense” account. You will need this to do laundry and print - and some kids forget about this and can’t do laundry. You have to use your card to do laundry - no coin machines.

Your parents can stay on campus if they want. If they do, they will be in a dorm room just like you are. They can still participate in the activities if they prefer to stay in a hotel. Your orientation roommate will be assigned as you arrive- if you have a roommate preference you have to get there at the same time. Parents do not have to participate in orientation activities- we did not, but some parents find some of the sessions helpful.

There’s a schedule posted on the orientation website :)
