@cbow17 Thanks for the insight! I knew that places like UNC and UVA had to meet a minimum of in-state applicants, but I’m not certain of the percentage. Looks like I need to reevaluate a bit! Thanks, and best of luck with UNC! I know from others how hard it is OOS, but I’m sure you’ll be fine!
All universities in the UNC system were created to serve students from North Carolina first. Only 18% spots are available for students from OOS and legacy or athletes make up most of the number, then students who have something “special” that is a unique fit for the university. The OOS cap isn’t that fixed but roughly the same at UVA.
@MYOS1634 Thanks for the percentage! 18% is obviously low, but hopefully my chances aren’t impossible. Thanks again for the insight, you guys!
Welcome to NC State
@ClarinetDad16 Is it because you are from NC State, or is it that you think my chances at the other universities are reaches? I’m not sure how to take this…
Sounds like the most likely outcome and it is a solid school
Bump- Oh, ok. I’ve really pondered State, but I’m not sure yet. I still want to see if UNC/UVA/UM will even be plausible to get into, but some aren’t very likely. More comments to help provide even more insight based on what is improving/detrimental to my app would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the input!
You’re not in the same pool at UNC and at UVA/UM. UNC is a good match since you’re instate. The others are very unlikely.
Aside from OOS and somewhat higher overall stats, is that it? I’ve been wondering if UNC would just be a better decision for me (If I get in), since (correct me if I’m wrong, please) both their Mathematics and Business programs are relatively close in comparison to UVA and a little bit lower than UM. Other than that, the campus looked very nice when I went a few months back, which is something I probably won’t be able to do for either UVA or UM. Then again, NC state will hopefully be a choice as well, as I’ve been there and enjoyed the campus there as well. More comments on my chances are appreciated!
UofM-AA is a reach and Cornell is a no. It’s just because of your average ACT score. If you were to get into the 30s, you may have a chance. Maybe retake it.
Same for SAT ^^ get a 2100 and see what happens.
@LilRussian Thanks for giving me a more relative idea on testing. Sadly, I may not have time to retake either by the deadline (UM is February and earlier I stopped receiving responses on Cornell b/c I gave up on that idea based on others; both are probably not going to happen regardless…) because I planned on taking Subject Tests to bolster my chances at UVA. I probably plan on retaking Math 2 and Physics to bolster my application for UVA, hoping I may have a better chance there. Long story short- I may not apply to UM because of my inadequate test scores. Thanks though!
I recently got into UMich with a 28 ACT. I think what got me in is that I talked about their curriculum and how it would benefit me on the “Why Michigan” writing part.
@AcceptableName Are you in-state or OOS, just out of curiosity?
You can keep bumping, but your chances won’t change. No chance at UVA or Michigan. UNC is a reach because your reading score is so low, and you ACT is 25th percentile, but you might squeak in because you are in-state. NC State is a match.
@Drogba1464 in-state
@AcceptableName Ok, just wondering. I’m OOS, so the 28 ACT probably wouldn’t do as good for my at UM, especially since I’m in-state. Thanks anyway, though!
BUMP- I know that it’s been a while, but I wanted to post another update:
- I recently made the All-District Band and have qualified for All-State.
-I retook the ACT in December and did so much better! I got a 31 Composite (34 Math, 30 Reading, 31 Science, and 28 English.) - I scored better on subject tests in January as well. The Physics I got a 690, and the Math 2 I got a 740.
If there is anyone that is interested in evaluating my chances now, that would be greatly appreciated!
Bump- Glad to say that I was accepted to UNC yesterday, and I hope to hear about State in the next few days (Probably tomorrow). Thanks for all of the help so far!
Congratulations for the acceptance! You raised ACT nicely.
