Any & All Advice Please

I'm currently up in Philly as a dance major and I'm thinking of transferring. I've narrowed it down to either JMU, University of South Carolina, or Shenandoah.
The problem is that I don't know any dancers at these schools and the only times tours are available would be when I'm in class, and my school only allows us to miss once every 5 weeks before our grades drop.
Basically, if anyone has any input, advice, or even suggestion of a better school I would be extremely grateful. I'm trying to get away from the feminism and post modernism that is currently taking over and causing our director to fire our jazz teachers.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I do not know about South Carolina, but both Shenandoah and JMU require auditions. Shenandoah and JMU are only about 50 minutes away from each other. Can you schedule your auditions at these two schools for the same weekend? JMU has a Friday audition as well as Saturday. When you audition you will have the opportunity to see facilities and meet current students and faculty. Because admission is competitive you may want to apply to more than one program to give yourself more opportunity for choices.

melissalynne: Are you at UArts? I think if you went to the director and told her what you are thinking she could get you some special considerations for missing classes for those auditions. Don’t be afraid to talk to her, my DD has on many occasions. Just explain to her your reasons for wanting to transfer. And you can make up at least some of your classes, my DD has done that as well. Feel free to message me.

My daughter auditioned at Shenandoah and although we hadn’t heard much about it initially, it became one of her top choices. Shenandoah sponsors a dance day which is later this month. You can take a day and take classes there with students at the program, which could also count as your audition. They also hold a performance that night. I can tell you that my daughter, whom I considered a skilled dancer felt that of all her auditions (Point Park, UARTS and Buffalo), Shenandoah’s audition was the most challenging, mostly due to the jazz, which was taught by a teacher named Tiffanie Carsen. My daughter also enjoyed the show (I missed it most of it because I got sick), which she said showed a solid caliber of dance. In the end, my daughter was accepted to all four dance programs, but she is leaning towards Point Park, because their show reflected a very high caliber of dance. However, depending on what sort of package she receives from Shenandoah, it is still in the running. Good luck!

We live in SC and I do not hear anyone putting USC at the top of their list for dance colleges. My daughter is a Jr now so we are putting our college list together and USC isn’t on it. We have a friend at Point Park. Good Luck!

USC has a new BFA in Dance starting for freshman in the fall of 2015. Our daughter is a senior this year, so USC’s program starts a year too late for her. USC is a great school, and I’m sure it will quickly become a strong program.

May be talking about 2 different USCs… University of Southern California has the new BFA program starting Fall 2015. University of South Carolina has a BA in Dance but haven’t heard much about it on this forum.
