Anyone know anything about the dance major at GMU? They seem to be trying to beef it up, including having a summer intensive this past summer. (I am asking for a friend ... my daughter won't be majoring in dance.)

Hi,
My dd dances at Shenandoah Conservatory and she attended the American College Dance Festival and saw them dance and she was not too impressed. She said the only other school there that she thought was any good was James Madison. So if she is looking in VA I would look at Shenandoah and James Madison. JMU is modern based and shenandoah does ballet, jazz and modern.Hope this helps

Students at James Madison also take classes in Jazz, Tap, and Ballet… but most of the performance pieces are modern.

I do not know much about the program at GMU.

KatMT, can students minor in dance at JMU?

Yes. It is a non-auditioned minor. Minoring in dance does not guarantee placement in dance classes. And all the mainstage and most of the studio theatre dance performance opportunities in the department are for majors only, but the minors take classes with the majors and musical theatre majors.

There are a number of dance clubs not affiliated with the dance program that provide performance opportunities for non-dance majors.
