So I am going into my first year of graduate school in the fall, and learned that you are considered independent on the FAFSA if you will have already earned a bachelor’s degree by that academic year. What kind of advantage is there of giving your custodial parent’s information when you are independent, if there is any?
No advantage. Why would you want to include your parent income and assets if you are not required to do so?
Just keep in mind…need based aid for grad schools doesn’t operate the same as for undergrad. Most aid for grad school is merit based…except loans.
Okay thanks. I’ll remove my parent’s info from my FAFSA in that case.
You will file the FAFSA as an independent student because you are going to a graduate/professional program
Most of the financial aid for masters programs are in the form of loans there may be some merit money.
Remember any bills in your name that are paid by others must be listed on the FAFSA under monies paid on your behalf.
So professional school programs (med, vet, dentistry and law) May request the income and assets of your parents to determine your eligibility for need based.
