Hello, first off, I have recieved several letters and brochures from Columbia (As well as Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, and the University of Pennsylvania). I decided to visit Columbia this summer and I plan in applying. I was wondering if someone could tell me what my chances are...

GPA: 3.6
SAT: 1840 (I plan on taking it one or two more times to boost my score)
PSAT: 183 (I believe I am being considered for either National Merit or the National Hispanic Recognition Program)
Class Rank: Top 12 percent

Class wise I take all Honors/AP classes.

Extracurricular activities: Varsity baseball (Don't plan on playing in college), National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society,
National Society of High School Scholars

I do community service regularly around my local area. ( Meals on Wheels, Animal Shelter, etc.)

Again I am Hispanic so I realize my chances are slightly better at getting in.

I still need to take my ACT and my SAT subject tests, but if I do good on those, increase my SAT score into the 2000s, and keep my grades up, will I have a legitimate shot at being accepted?

I would say it’s a long shot. And a 183 will definitely not have you considered for national merit. But you need to get your test scores up a lot and make yourself stand out. Just being Hispanic won’t make you stand out. You can always apply and hope for the best but it’s a long shot for you

I know I am being considered for something, I believe it was the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Anyways, thanks for replying.

Lol just because you recieve brochures doesn’t mean they want you they send them to mostly everyone.

But I would say your SAT is holding you back plus nothing stands out in your ECs, and GPA is a bit below, but you may have an upward trend.

2000s won’t cut it for Columbia because the 25% is 2140, so I would aim for at least a 2200

I would say High Reach, but you never know. Might as well apply and hope for the best

Just boost your SAT score! If you made an 800 on the Math II, it could improve your chances by a ton. Also, I don’t agree entirely with the post saying that being hispanic wont help. It will.

^to clarify I never said being Hispanic won’t help. But it won’t make them a stand out applicant. I mean there will be many other well qualified Hispanic applicants to these schools.
