Any Chance?

Hi, I'm a junior in Virginia, and I was wondering if you all could give me any feedback on whether or not I have any chance at getting into the Naval Academy. I am Asian-American, and have spent about half of my life living in China, and I am fluent in both English and Chinese. My grades in the 9th grades were not very good, I'm pretty sure my GPA was around 3.2, but I have shown improvement in my grades since then. I play an instrument, and I was 2nd chair in my district band and in the 9th grade I made an international honors band. Last year, I was a member of my school's marching band. As a freshman, I was a started on my school's JV basketball team in China, and since moving back to the US, I have played YMCA basketball since last year. Currently, I am looking to either volunteer as a coach for a younger children's basketball team or as a member of the local resque squad. I realize that I live in a very competitive area in terms of applying for the Navy, so I was wondering if I have any chance at all of being recommended. Thanks for any feedback

Your first chance to see if you have what they want is to apply for NASS early in Feb '06. Keep an eye on this site: http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm It is an online application that will appear Feb 1. The earlier you apply, the better your chances. In the mean time...do your absolute best on the PSAT, and SAT's. I recommend you study up and take the January or February SAT I. Your GPA and class standing are important so do the best you can. It is too subjective to say where your chances lie. Look at the Class of 2009 profile and try to put yourself in the middle 50% or better for as many catagories as you can.

Desire, motivation, improvement, dedication and leadership go a long way toward improving your chances. So if your effort really shows, you could likely be competitive even in the lower 25% catagories.

Also, if you decide to strive for it....definitely read "The Naval Academy Candidate Book" by Smallwood. This will give you an insiders look at "How to get in, How to Prepare and How to Survive (fairly well rounded inside look in my opinion). If after reading and absorbing what this book says, you'll have an idea of the motivation required to compete and succeed.

Best of Luck!! and Don't Give Up the Ship.

Hey everybody,
If you could just look at my stats and tell me how I stack up, I'd really appreciate it.
I'm a 16 yr old white male from Baltimore,MD. I've just started my junior yr, and I was just wondering how I look so far.

I will need a vision waiver
I about 8/90 in class rankings

Please respond/Be honest

Looks great, go for it if you really want to. As most are on here, you are very competative IMO.

As I'm sure you know the vision waiver can be tricky...a limited number of those who require one are taken. My son was in that "boat" and didn't make it to Annapolis. He did get into CGA and is happy there. But otherwise your stats and activities look good. Try to get into NASS for a real taste of the academy and consider applying to the others as well. Good luck!

Let me make the suggestion that the person you should start talking with is your Blue and Gold Officer (BGO). Go to your school's counsellor/guidance office and ask for the name of your BGO. They will have it. Start an email correspondance with this person and you can be assured they have your interests at heart to help you through this initial thinking-though process. Even if all they direct you to is a webiste - it helps to begin the chat. Our daughter was so sure was wanted to go USNA - as a freshman she began a coorespondance with the BGO- by the time her interview rolled around 3 1/2 years later - they knew each other well.

God Bless you heart's desire to serve our country!!
