Any (cheap) alternative to Penn health insurance (PSIP) ?

^ That’s true. I’m still interested just because I’m Canadian. Also MajorLazer, the brochure says it excludes pre-existing conditions though…but it has to in order to meet Penn’s requirements?

I’m not sure, to be honest. My dad handled all of the health insurance stuff. It passed the waiver the past two years though.

The per-incident amount is also lower than what Penn requires…I believe they ask for $500,000 per incident.

MajorLazer might have that plan plus the Penn add-on and that takes care of their insurance requirements.

Does anyone know if this insurance works with penn’s requirements?

We looked into it today, and the plan doesn’t meet the requirements anymore. The clauses about suicide attempts and alcohol are new this year, and according to the lady at the insurance company, it would be almost impossible for a foreign student to get coverage for those with any company.

Can’t help but feel that they changed it so that it’d be harder to get a waiver…

Can’t help but feel they collude with the insurance company (Aetna) to come up with the policy to force the relatively healthy student population to get this Cadillac plan and do I dare say possibly make more money?

Well, yes. Make it harder for students to get a waiver and have them enroll in the pricey Penn plan. I feel like Penn has generally been pretty transparent with costs in my two years there, and we haven’t been surprised or shocked by any increases. These changes border on ridiculous though. Mandatory coverage for treatment relating to suicide attempts? Unreal.

It’s crazy that over four years, a student on PSIP will pay $12,000+ in mandatory health insurance that isn’t considered when calculating financial aid. We have no qualms paying for tuition or fees, but this hidden cost alone is almost 3 years of tuition at a Canadian school.

/rant over.

^Wish I could “like” posts on CC.

Hardly surprising. Penn’s administration is amongst the sleaziest in the U.S.

So, does anyone know any alternate insurance that works? Please!

More complaints. I wonder if it is by design that they make it so hard to enroll in the Add-on plan? First, there is no easy way to find the information, I stumbled on to it by chance last year surfing the website. Then you have to go through a maze of procedures to get to enroll. All this to pay a little less than the 3k they want from you for people who already have insurance coverage. Moreover, why can’t I get coverage for just the time the student is at school, why do I have to pay for the whole year?

Sorry Mixter, I think they close that loopholes and changed the policy to make it very hard to get around paying less than what they are asking with other insurance plan.

PSI plan E works for Penn everyone.

Replace Penn with Columbia and you’ll have it right.

Anyway, I do agree that the requirement is ridiculous because there are so many bonuses in the insurance plan that are unnecessary for such a young student population.
My only question would be regarding the rationale that Penn has towards the plan.
Are there any DP articles targeting this issue? Is it just assumed that Penn students need better health insurance amenities because we live in Killerdelphia? (J/K)

@itsinreach: thanks for the tip but PSI is for international students only, right? Need a plan for American students :(

Hmm, maybe we should file a class-action against this whole Penn’s insurance thing! Especially when the insurance premium was never calculated in COA!!!
