Any Chinese from mainland in Amherst?

Hi

I’ve just heard that Amherst hasn’t admitted any mainlanders for ages. Is that true? Any current Amherst students willing to clarify this rumor? Thanks in advance!

I can't check until I get back from break and can access the campus network, but I would be surprised if that rumor were true.

One of D's friends went home to China last Christmas Break and brought back some things for her, so the rumor is definitely false.

I know precious few (that is to say, no) Taiwanese, whereas the place is swarming with mainlanders.

Does Amherst like as many country represented as possible? Would they give aid to someone who comes from a lesser known country even tho he is less qualified (not in terms of test scores, grades.. but just a bit lacking in stellar ECs)..

If by aid you mean extra money, then no. All aid is need-based and Amherst will meet 100% of your demonstrated need regardless (yes, this applies to internationals too).

If by aid you mean a boost in admissions, I'm not so sure.

I have access to numbers now, and the rumor is indeed false. Amherst has enrolled 7-8 mainland Chinese each of the past four years.

hi Catfish,
could you please tell me if the Chinese students they enrolled get fin-aid?
needing aid seems really kills an application..

catfish, i meant a boost..

Do you mind posting the list of countries of students admitted over the past years?..

isa087, that's probably not public information, but I think Amherst will be need blind for internationals very soon.

jhl, since Amherst has chosen to restrict access to that information, I think it's probably better if I don't post it on a public forum. If you have a specific question, like the OP, I can answer that, but I'm not going to copy and paste the whole thing.

Catfish, is Brunei ever represented at Amherst?

Not recently, so far as I can tell, though I imagine Amherst gets very few applicants from Brunei, given its small size. There have been Amherst students from Brunei's larger neighbors (Malaysia, Indonesia, and especially Singapore).

Oh and isa087, all enrolled students, including internationals, receive 100% of demonstrated need. The college is, however, not yet need-blind for internationals, although becoming so is a priority and will likely be accomplished soon.

^If Brunei is not represented, will that translate to higher chances for me?
