Any Columbia students with knowledge of economics major at Columbia?

Hey,

I'm pretty interested in Columbia right now, it seems pretty nice. I wanted to know if any of the economics majors out there or people who know economics major people could help me out. I just wanted to know what job opportunities were normally like for these people considering they are in the heart of the financial world...

Are there a lot of financial recruiters on campus?

Also... this applies to any Columbia student...

Would you say that the school has a lot of school pride, because when I went there, the one thing I noticed the most was that the school didn't have much school spirit.

Also, how's the social life? Are the kids at Columbia fun people in general and is there always something entertaining to do on campus?

How does being in New York influence the social life? (are there more off campus events, more off campus parties, bar vs frat scene, etc.)?

Thanks guys

What makes you think Columbians don't have any school pride? How can you tell that? Is it by the number of people wearing Columbia sweaters, or what?
People really work hard to get in there, so I just don't understand your point. As long as you're proud of your school, what the hell!!!!
True, the sports teams' results ain't nothing to be proud about, but well, that can eventually improve

Econ = Most popular major at Columbia, I believe. We have a pretty excellent department, with big-name professors like Sachs, Bagwati and Stiglitz (shudder).

As for school spirit: if you're a "Ra Ra Gooooo Team!" kind of person, then Columbia is not the school for you. That isn't to say we aren't proud of our school...we just generally don't have the "spirit" you would find at (Whatever) State.

Are there a lot of financial recruiters on campus?

I believe that all of the big companies like Goldman, Citigroup, and Merill, recruit on campus. Most of these big companies recruit at all the big name schools. That said, competition is tough no matter which school you go to.

As for the other stuff, I really wouldnt know but I'll tell you after I get there in August.
