Any Computational Math Majors out there?

Had some questions about this major. Please PM me if you can

This is a brand new program – only two years old. I don’t think any of the majors has even graduated yet. It’s another interesting baby step in the direction of things that happen in engineering schools at other universities, but I bet they are still feeling their way. It’s an interdepartmental thing rather than a department unto itself, which isn’t always a recipe for success, but which can be fine.

The Math Department has long offered an Applied Math B.S., but it is so little different from a regular Math B.S. that I think it’s never been very popular. And a lot of people who might have been interested wind up doing Math With Specialization in Economics. It’s interesting to me: At Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Princeton – i.e., other non-technical colleges that attract top math students – applied math (or in Princeton’s case, OR) is more popular than straight math, often twice as popular. But at Chicago, straight math rules.

The most recent university reports show about 33 declared majors, over three classes. That compares with 360-some Math majors, 100 Statistics majors, and a handful of Applied Math majors. You may have trouble finding a student on CC to answer your questions. Your child may have better luck calling the department and asking to be put in touch with some current majors.

@JHS Thanks. Will do that

One of my best friends is doing it, I am doing Math + CS so am taking a lot of the classes in it. From my viewpoint, CAPM is basically the intro classes of math, cs, and stats without really touching much of the upper divs. It goes for breadth over depth, but is a useful combination to have for data science related work. For grad school, I would recommend pure math. PM for any specific questions.
