pretty much

hey everyone, I'm struggling with the analytical essay:

Write an analytical essay discussing a problem, theory or idea that you find compelling. You may draw from any source—for example,
a book, a current event, or a work of art—but please do not submit a research paper or something you have written for class.

Obviously some research must be done in order to have information to analyze, but all conclusions drawn from affirmable facts appear to be common knowledge or dead obvious and I'm unsure if personal experience is appropriate for an analytical essay. I've been detached from academics for several years. Can someone illuminate me?

Jake

Maybe you should try disproving 'common knowledge,' or show that something that seems 'dead obvious,' is actually enigmatic.

My essay deals with color philosophy. I am trying to figure out the correlation(s) between someone's background and the way they associate colors with emotions. I hope to disprove the conventional belief that, in general, all members of Western Civilization associate colors to emotions in the same way. Through a survey, I want to prove that one's race, religion, and familial origin have major effects on color association.

thanks, to hell with my preoccupations. Good luck to all

ahhh only 3 days till the deadline

I started these essays much later than most of you, probably, and thus am facing a couple sleepless nights... haha.
I feel like my #2 essay is going to be pretty inadequate compared to most of yours.

nah dude i've been going through the exact same thing. i didn't really catch onto a strong idea for my essays until this week, so i've been pulling mad all nighters to try and finish in time for the deadline

i bet applicants go through this every year. its probably another part of deep springs tradition

oh God.
I can't even describe this feeling.
This whole week I've been thinking the postmark deadline was tomorrow, that Friday was Nov. 15th somehow.
And it's not.
yes.

haha! oy vey.

hey are you guys using the entire 3500 words? in other words, do you think it would be OK if my word total is 2500 for all three essays?

any word total should be fine...i think they're just trying to keep essay length down to a reasonable level for the admissions committee. for what it's worth, my word count is 3490

DS1 is just finishing his app. Good luck to all.

3,491 words completed at the last minute.
My essay #2 really sucks. >_<
Oh well.

did anyone go over the word limit?

I went over the word limit, by how much depends on whether substantive footnotes are meant to be considered part of the essays. Last year they called with round two decisions on the 14th (December)...

Best of luck to all.

...this topic is quiet. Too quiet.
Ha.

Did a little bit of internet digging to figure this phrase out:

"Brekekekex koax koax," the ancient Greek for "croak croak," is the refrain of the frog chorus in Aristophanes' comedy The Frogs (written in 405 B.C.). The constant croaking annoys the god Dionysus, who complains, "Brekekekex koax koax -- from you I'm catching your disease!"

As for Aultaforte"s second post, I couldn't find a thing. Internet translators are less than reliable. I did get a good laugh from the output english translation the porgam gave me though.
