Wow well I certainly hope that isn't the case. The last thing in the world I would want to see is Deep Springs becoming another school with thousands upon thousands of applicants, like the Ivies.

Part of the mystique and allure of DSC, at least for me, is its' shroud of near-secrecy. At any given time there's only a few hundred people in the world that even know it exists.

Did 2008 really have a record number of college applicants? I had heard that our class was supposed to be relatively less competitive than those of the last few years.
By the way, how did everyone hear about Deep Springs? It's kind of a low status school. No counselor of mine had heard of it before.

Apparently the high school class of 2009 is the largest applicant class in history.

My friend told me about Deep Springs. It was actually in my college guide book (Fiske), but I would have never noticed it without his help.

I've heard that a certain percentage of top male scorers on the SAT I are automatically mailed brochures. Everyone else has to find out by word-of-mouth, because the school is on a relatively tight budget and can't really afford to send out fliers at the rate that other colleges do.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the Deep Springs applicant pool increased slightly. But I can't imagine it'd go over 250-300, it's a pretty weird, unknown school.

... Though the vast majority of those applicants are probably good fits for this school.

I found out through Wikipedia, looking up info for the Telluride Association about a year ago.
You probably know already, but there are some great video and radio segments on the official website for Deep Springs. Both are public broadcasting pieces, one from NPR (which requires creating an account) and another from a regional pbs station in California.

As far as conspiracy theory talk goes, the odds of Deep Springs having a record year seem unlikely. In general, economic collapses cause enrollments (and presumably applications as well) at alternate education institutions to decline. That said, very few educational experiments are as well-established or cost effective to the student as Deep Springs.

If I remember correctly, despite the record year for college applications as a whole, last year DS applications were slightly down from the previous year, although with a school as small as DS, the number of applications (and selectivity in percentages) can vary considerably from year to year.

I'm sure there is a reason there doesn't seem to be notifications yet (other than DS just doesn't like any of us and rejected all posters/lurkers on CC).

I feel like bbear. I was really pumped about applying to DS. And I thought a lot about what I was going to write, but then I ended up having only a day or two to finish. So I completed everything in a rush, and my essays were definitely subpar. There are even a few typos (which make me really mad). Accordingly, I am not expecting to get 'called back' because my initial app was truly dreadful. My essays weren't even as heady or intellectual as the ones you guys have mentioned. These past few says have been really stressful and I'm feeling pretty ****ty about now; it is also pretty depressing, a whole bunch of people at my school (and probably at your's too) are getting in to college early, and I am becoming really envious. All I can say is that this is unbelievably frustrating!

I am gathering no notices have been received yet? Or calls? I have a DS who applied and has received nothing back. We've assumed no call is a no.

You could expand on the idea of an applicant boom and believe that this delay in the round two notices is also intentional. If DS really does have a bloated applicant pool this year, a way to combat that is to actually let the early decision phase at other schools pass. Why wait and lose some of your best applicants? DS probably wants to see who really wants to be there. If the pool is stacked with competitive pretentious bastards who only see DS as a stepping stone on their way to HYP, let them get accepted to HYP. That way those accepted students will be less inclined to write another three essays when DS calls, and DS can choose someone else who really wants to be there. JMO.

That would be a smart idea on their part...

(Still no calls from anybody. But their "mid-December" posting is looking hopeful that the calls should be starting tomorrow night. Cough.)

Imagine if they called during Christmas Day. That'd be pretty cool -- my family doesn't actually do the presents thing, that'd be a much-more-than-suitable replacement.
...But I really hope they start calling this week so I can either be ecstatic or disappointed already.

My son was in contact with DS recently to confirm receipt of a late app. He said they indicated they had received about 100 apps(? validity of this #) and they would let him know on or around Dec 18.

I think they might try and get notifications done before they go on winter break...

Term 3: October 31 - December 18
Break: December 19 - January 8

Part of the student body stays behind during breaks to take care of the ranch, which will certainly include some members of apcom. That said, phone calls were spread over several days last year, and it might be hard for them to make ~40 calls in two days.

Is it possible they are only going to send mail notifications?
