Any disadvantage to using "priority" application offers?

same here, they seem okay

We got an email from Rice U., said application fee is waived.
Is this the same as the "priority" thing discussed here? Any body know?

Thanks.

My S got one from Ursinus. He expressed interest at the college at the Colleges that Change Lifes Fair. He wasn't thinking about applying, but we dont see any down side. It would be like the ultimate safety. It would take a lot of pressure off of him if he had an acceptance before Halloween! Actually my wife said that I was the one who would benefir most.

I take it we dont have to answer before the RD deadline (may)

There is upside for the college because they get more looks then they would have otherwise

Waived application fee is not the same as a "priority application". Colleges waive application fees for a variety of reasons, and it usually means you have a slightly better shot of getting in. However, you're no sure shot and will be thoroughly vetted just like everyone else.

Priority applications are different, in that they are sent to candidates schools already expect to be admit-worthy. Their brevity encourages more top applicants and hopefully, more top students attending. Using them is a good thing since you've kind of been pre-screened for admission, but even if you don't use them, having received one indicates much better chances.

I just got an email from Colorado School of Mines for my D with an online app with no fee and no essay. Looked very easy to fill out. It says they will accept SAT scores from the school transcript although that doesn't help us since my D's school doesn't put test scores on the transcript.

Two years ago my daughter got the same email from CSM - in fact, she was busy and they sent it repeatedly. She did the application online the night of the deadline!
She got accepted and even visited - nice school.

My take - they already "know" they have a good candidate - they just need the application and transcripts.

D got one from Drew, and she's a junior! It offered an application fee waiver ($50) and "a non-binding decision and early merit scholarship consideration". They must think she's a senior - maybe I should email them to let them know she's a junior and will be applying next year... or maybe not because right now D says she only wants to go where it's warm.

I don't see anything to lose by using these applications, and if you get several, the fee waivers will add up...

To add to the list, I've gotten priority apps from Brandeis and Hood in email.

This week, Tulane and Washington College arrived via snail mail, University of Vermont, Drew and Hood via email. Rensselaer came, but no fee waiver.

Thanks again, everyone, for your responses.

Yea, it sounds stupid but I love getting these. It feels like collecting baseball cards or something.

To date, I've received Tulane, RPI, and University of Portland. I'm glad I didn't fill out RPI, because of the whole fee waiver -- or rather the lack of one. Tualne and UoP both have them though. I only actually considered one of these schools before. This makes the process of applying a lot easier because I just have more options if I get in. Props to the admissions officers doing these.

^Me 2. I love these things.

the College of Wooster has a priority application. i recieved one, but didn't fill it out as i was already pretty much done with the Common App o_o

there was no application fee for the priority one, but also there wasn't a fee if you filled out all your materials and submitted them through the Common App website.

so overall, while the priority application was a bit shorter and i wouldn't have had to write an essay of the length i did, there's really no advantage over the other i guess.

Anyhow, was just going through all the e-mails that have collected, we have RPI (no fee waver), Tulane (no fee, no essay and 4 weeks), Ursinus (no fee, no recs, no essay, 4 weeks), brandeis (no fee and feb notification), URochester for Bauch & Laumb (no fee), Iona (no fee, no essay, early notice)

Have to go through all the snail mail next.

WPI is another.. UVM that was mentioned.

I got a lot of smaller colleges this Monday, most notably Northern Arizona University. I heard Washington University went out? If anyone got that that would care to list GPA/ACT/SAT scores that would be cool.

D got emails from Tulane, Whitworth, and Northern Arizona offering the priority app..

i'm considering filling out northern arizona's just to have a safety school -- anyone know if it is even worth applying there?

My son got one from the University of Portlant (OR)

The only one he is interested in is Ursinus however

I looove getting those priority apps. It sounds pathetic I guess, but I feel better about myself knowing SOMEONE "wants" me. I've gotten them from Drexel, Fordham, Tulane, York, a " direct conection" app from Wake Forest, St. John's, Siena, RIT, Drew, and UVM. Georgia State called today and said they were sending a priority one soon.

Son just got a fee waive, priority app from NY Poly school. I had never heard of it, but he is looking for comp sci tech schools so maybe....
