Any econ concentrators out there?

Starting freshman year in just a number of weeks!! Any advice on how not to die? Recommendations on course load for freshman year and beyond, like which classes in the department are rewarding and not super difficult to get good grades in?

Also, I'm flipping through the Advanced Standing booklet, and I'm considering it. Do you know anyone who's jumped right into the 1010 series without taking ec10 and gotten an A? Thanks!

Im not going to harvard, but im an econ concentrator at another school, so I did look a lot into harvard's econ dept. My 2 cents is that, if you can, do take classes with Mankiw and Roland Frey... two awesome professors. Also, I don't know if Alan Krueger is still there or if he teaches undergrads... if he is, take classes with him too!!! These are def. 3 of the faculty members which I wish my dept. had....

Alan Krueger has always taught and continues to teach at Princeton.

hmm... well go to princeton then lol... sry... I don't know why, but for a long time I have been assuming that krueger taught at harvard... perhaps because he got his doctorate there. well, to make up for it, a name I'd add to the list then is Ben Friedman... and I apologize for my mistake

In response to your original question, the vast majority of students take Ec10 here instead of jumping into the Ec1010 series. I would HIGHLY suggest that you take that route instead, because the vast majority (I would say 99%) of students have a better foundation for the class since they took Ec10 in their freshman year.

If you really enjoyed AP Macro and Micro and did EXTREMELY well, then you can go into Ec1010.

In terms of AS, don't do Advanced Standing - unless you want to graduate in 3 years, which isn't advisable... even 4 years is too short to enjoy everything Harvard has to offer!

I know a lot of people who skipped Ec10 and did just fine. But a 5 on Macro + Micro is pretty essential if you want to go that route.

If you don't A. take a stupid schedule (i.e. Math 55, intensive language, Chem20, Physics 15) or B. go crazy at the activities fair and join 50 groups, or C. get drunk/high every night, you really shouldn't have workload issues. The biggest problem is just finding time to do your work, when so much cool stuff is going on.

I agree with xjayz about advanced standing. The only reason I could see to do it is financial, and hopefully the HFAI has eliminated that.

I'm playing it safe and going with Ec10.
