Does anyone have any experience with the Oberlin fly-in program? Having visited already (just info session and tour), is it worth the time (two days out of school) and money ($400) for an already-interested kid to visit prior to application and acceptance?
I cannot speak specifically about Oberlin’s program, but in our experience, it is has been more useful to schedule a second visit to a school once the child is already accepted and is seriously considering attending. You tend to look at things much more realistically that way.
Thanks. Good point. My thought was that it might help articulate and focus interest (or establish lack thereof), but I worry about the time investment in what will already be a busy and mission-critical fall. Also $$. I’d rather have him visit a school he HASN’T seen yet.
If it is currently one of your son’s top three or four choices, I would say that it is worth the time and investment. It will show a significant commitment to the school, which will make him even more of a competitive applicant. It will give him an opportunity to spend time in class, and talk personally with a variety of other students. And he’ll see the campus as he will be living it next year–without his parents around.
