Visiting Oberlin and Admissions: Input Needed

My D. is a senior applying to Oberlin this year, and is very interested in the school.
She had interviewed with them when the admission counselor was in our area, during which the interviewer recommended that she visit.
We had planned to visit last week, but could not due to the hurricane and related complications.
It is logistically difficult for us to make a visit this year, in Nov/Dec, but not totally impossible.

My question: Is it very important for the admission decision at Oberlin that she visit?

We can easily make a visit next year for her to see the college etc, but it is about doing in before the application deadline that we have difficulty.

Please advise if you are familiar with this college and its processes. Thanks.

You don’t need to worry about this. If it’s difficult to visit, this will certainly not be held against you in the admissions decision–just be sure the particular counselor for your area knows you’re strongly interested and hope to visit if your daughter is accepted in the spring.

I believe that in its common data set, Oberlin says that “level of interest” is considered. While there may be other ways to demonstrate a high level of interest, I think most colleges would say the best way is by visiting. So I think it does matter. I don’t think it will keep a kid out who clearly has the grades, test scores, etc., to get in, but on a close call it will matter. I definitely would let your Oberlin adm counselor know the circumstances that prevented the visit.

Dave’s right-- don’t worry about this. We understand that many applicants are unable to visit campus for a variety of reasons, and we don’t hold it against them in the review process. Of course, if you daughter is very interested, it certainly wouldn’t hurt for her to do as nepop suggests and email her admissions counselor to let them know that you had a visit planned and had to cancel due to the storm.

Thank you all. I will ask her to write to the counselor.

Comment on ElizabethHouston’s quick response: consistent with what my son and I found when we visited, the Oberlin admissions office is as helpful, accomodating and friendly as any I have found. Good work.

Hello,
I am currently a freshman at Oberlin College & Conservatory, and I can tell you that I didn’t even interview for the school, nor did I visit until after I was accepted.
