Any future freshmen planning on work study?

Hi, I'm attending CMU first year this August... is anyone also a first year student and planning on working via work-study program? Is there a certain time one would have to apply for a job?

You should try to do applications early before the easiest jobs get snatched up. I'd recommend getting a job as a desk attendant if you want something mindless where you can sit and do homework. If you're in a technical field, you might want to try and do research with a professor for your work-study, since that'll get you in the lab early and hopefully expose you to some things your peers aren't.

do you know when the applications take place? i tried calling CMU but they didn't answer >.<

For all campus jobs, the best way to find opportunities is tartanTrak.

Carnegie Mellon University Career Center - TartanTRAK Log-in

I think you'll need an andrewID (email address) to access it, so you may need to wait. FYI, tartanTrak is also where you can search for jobs and internships later in your college career, and also sign up for mock interviews and company info sessions etc.

I second the idea that desk attendants have an easy job and engineering/science kids should talk to professors about lab assistant positions. Another cool option are a bunch of community service jobs (you MUST qualify for federal work study though). They're fun work with kids and the pay is much higher than on campus.
