Keep in mind that I am an international student and that I don’t have a lot of money…I just want to know opinions about good accessible colleges that offer generous and varied forms of financial aid for internationals, and have a good computer science program. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Define “affordable” for you.
Also, some basic stats so that others can get an idea of where you may be admitted or where you may get the (uncommon for internationals) merit scholarships would help.
With affordable I mean that they are willing to provide internationals with a lot of money. Help them out, provide in campus jobs, need base policy, or merit scholarships maybe… In perspective, out of $60,000 I can only pay $10,000. And I’m exaggerating there, i might only pay half of that actually. SAT scores are decent but not great:1850. 3.9 GPA, (Although I dont know if colleges will see my gpa as inflated because of the not so high SAT score) And good National Exams results
Also is there a way that colleges can see how much I’ve improved in the SAT? I say this because it is seriously hard for me, and other people in my country. I got a 1480 the first time, 1760 the second time. I mean isn’t it something??
The fact that you raised your score is good, but it doesn’t mean any school will give you “extra” just because you improved…the merit would be simply for your stats. The same would be given if you got that the first time.
Your stats are still low for most schools that give aid to int’ls.
You might look at Louisiana Tech, but I don’t know if they give to int’ls.
What is your M+CR?
1210… I know I dont have the best stats, but I just wanted to know of any options out there. Thanks for replying
The only schools that give major financial aid to internationals are a high reach or out of reach with your stats
I understand. However, there are colleges that dont require sat scores and accept national exams and gpa. Bowdoin for example and NYU Shanghai. My essay(s) are pretty good. With this in mind and taking a more holistic approach, couldn’t the application as a whole get me somewhere? Maybe not to those 2, but somewhere even if it’s a long shot?
Also, Im the captain of the capital’s table tennis minor league. I am among the first ranked in the country, ranging from 3rd to 5th and even 2nd sometimes, which puts me in the countries pre national team and national team candidates. My country doesn’t participate in a lot of international activities, so I can’t say I have played outside yet. With this kind of small spike could I get somewhere?
I’d suggest looking at affordable options in your home country.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/howard-us-kathmandu-connection-nepal-emerges-as-top-source-of-foreign-students/2014/08/27/4cd70376-2a20-11e4-958c-268a320a60ce_story.html mentions Howard, Louisiana Tech, and a few other schools as having scholarships for internationals, but you probably need higher test scores (e.g. 1400 on the SAT CR+M for the full rides at Howard and Louisiana Tech, if those are given to internationals).
Thanks! Ill look at those.
Not sure about NYU Shanghai, but Bowdoin is not need-blind for internationals (so needing a lot of aid hurts your admissions chances), If you get in they say they meet need (by their definition) for all students. But you have to have very high stats to get in as an international.
Colleges in South Africa look pretty inexpensive.
Ok. thanks people for helping!
You might consider applying at the grad level then you can be a TA etc. Lots of international students are able to find financing at the graduate level. If you go to a good undergraduate program in India, sometimes it can be more intensive than an undergraduate degree in an average university in the US.
This post is from October. Likely the OP figured out his/her plan of action by now.
