preferably automatic merit aid, but in general what are some good art schools that are generous with aid?

Spazzy…since you need lots of aid (near full ride), I don’t think there are any that will work for you.

Art schools award merit to a few students after reviewing their portfolios. SCAD does give a few awards, but the remaining costs are still going to be high. Art schools just don’t have the money to give away…either for need or merit.

None would have “assured merit” since their merit is awarded by portfolio, not by test scores. You have high stats and lowish need and your parents aren’t contributing.

If you want to major in art and need large merit, then apply to a university that gives large merit and has a strong art program.

Cleveland Institute of Art offered my daughter $18000 in institutional grant for her freshmen year. But, at $50000 cost of attendance, that was still too much.

SCAD offers sports scholarships. Other private art schools might, also. Is that a possibility?

I found out on this board about Winthrop University in South Carolina. They have a visual communication BFA with a concentration in Illustration. Because Georgia (our state) has no illustration major, and Georgia and SC are in the Academic Common Market (a consortium between 13 states), my daughter is supposed to be eligible for in-state SC tuition. Since we found out about this so late, we are still waiting for finalization, but it’s supposedly going to work out.

“If you want to major in art and need large merit, then apply to a university that gives large merit and has a strong art program.”

That’s the best piece of advice for this situation.

Atlartmom is your DD getting HOPE money? Is it also transferable under the circumstances?
