Are there any home-schooled students got admitted to UCLA or other UC campuses this year 2019 ? or any years before ?
There was someone admitted to UC Davis and someone else admitted to UCSB (both this year) on a different homeschooling forum (Well Trained Mind).
@JanieWalker Thank you very much for your info! It is great to hear that UC campus accept the homeschoolers. By any chance, do you have the link to the homeschooling forum (Well Trained Mind) that posted about the homeschoolers admitted to UC Davis and UCSB ? Thank you!
I know of a homeschooler who was admitted to UCSD this year.
@milgymfam Thank you very much for your info! It is great to hear another homeschooler get admitted to the UC campus, UCSD. Thank you!
@HOPE888 I don’t think I am allowed to post the link - but if you go to the Well Trained Mind website and click on “community,” that brings you to the forums. There is a college subforum with a college acceptances 2019 thread.
Hi. My kids went through the application cycle in 2014, 2016, and 2018. As such, I’ve been following the UCLA thread for a while. I have two currently attending UCLA.
I have seen homeschooled students reporting admittance over the years. I recall these students had exteral corroboration of academic performance ( ie dual enrollment college classes, subject test scores, high ACT/SAT)
@svlab112 I would guess that all homeschoolers in Cal state colleges have the same level of corroboration. California colleges requires extra testing or courses from homeschoolers since homeschool classes don’t meet a-g requirements.
@JanieWalker Thank you very much for the reply and info! I will check out the website,
@svlab112 Thank you very much for your info! Are your kids homeschooled and got admitted to UCLA ?
My kids attended public school. I’ve been following the UCLA threads (and the UC threads in general) since 2010ish.
@svlab112 Oh Ok, I see. I appreciate it very much for your valuable input of years of experiences following the UCLA and other UC threads!
I would also recommend you review the UC Admissions section on home school students. There is lots of information about how to meet the a-g requirements and additional information on what to include in personal insight questions for home schooled students.
When my kids applied, I also printed out the “How applications are reviewed”. They used this as a road map to ensure as many of the “14 factors we consider” were included somewhere on the application. I had 1 Engineering and 2 L&S students. They had good grades and tests score. They did not have super high weighted GPA like some of the students at other schools . Our public HS doesn’t have as many UC weighted classes. The maximum honors classes my kids could take was 4. Some students at other schools take 12+. My kids are example of how local context is considered.
@svlab112 Thank you very much for your tips! Do you mind to share your kids’ stats of any submitted SAT General Test scores, SAT Subject Test scores, AP (which subjects) and its scores ?
Going off memory:
No AP - school didn’t offer.
S2016 and S2018 - took 2-3 community college classes
All took most advanced math offered at HS - two year calculus sequence
All took chemistry, physics and biology in HS
2014 D
4.0 uw, 33 ACT, UC GPA 4.24: Attended UCB-EECS (Accepted Eng. UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, UCD)
6 - UC weighted courses
SAT Chem 760, SAT Math 760
ECs: singer/musician (hobby), school leadership, work experience
2016 S:
4.0 uw, 34 ACT, UC GPA 4.33: Attending UCLA L&S (Accepted UCB, UCD, UCSB, UCSD)
8 - UC weighted courses
No subject tests
ECs: competitive/school sport, community leadership, community volunteer
2018 S:
3.88 uw, 35 ACT, uncapped UC GPA 4.29: Attending UCLA L&S (Accepted UCB, UCSB. Waistlisted UCD, UCSD)
10 - UC weighted courses
No subject tests
ECs: competitive/school sport, team leadership, community volunteer
@svlab112 Congrats to you as all of your kids attending prestigious universities, UCB and UCLA,…Also, thank you very much for your details posting of your kids’ stats. All of them look very good stats! Are those UC weighted courses are taken from community college ? From the stat of 2014D, it’s interesting to see that there is no AP test needed to be admitted to the engineering program such as UCB and UCLA.
Our high school does not have AP classes, as such students are not expected to have AP exams.
The UCs review applications in the context of what is available to a student at their particular school.
The weighted classes are a mix of “honor classes” that are UC approved and community college (for my older two). Any CA HS can go through a UC approval process to have certain “honors” classes approved for extra weighting.
Our HS has 3 honors classes approved that way.
The list for each HS is found on the UC website and also includes the courses that are a-g for each CA HS.
Our school does offer IB classes which shows rigor but does not earn GPA bump or test results until senior year so those results are not in the 10-11 UC GPA.
@svlab112 Oh, I see, it makes sense. Thank you very much for your valuable input!
