Thanks irishforever.
I know how you feel as you have been thru this twice and are well aware of the uncertainity involve in this process.
But the whole process is new for us for the following reasons
1. Neither I or nor my Wife have studied in US, so our knowledge of the Universities is from the acquaintence and from the Newsweek ranking.
2. This is our first and only child, so we have not gone thru the process.
3. The process itself is very subjective.
4. We had no experience with US High School system and so are highly dependent on the child's school for guidance.

So it is not at all same for us. We are paranoid. We are planning to start visitng Universities starting this summer. Our child school won't have counslar working with us untill next January.

And our child didn't get material from CHYPMS even after scoring 209 on PSAT and checking the tab for information to be shared with colleges, so it did make us nervous as some students did get it.

POIH~I am beginning to understand why you seem more concerned than others might. If your son is an international student you need to find out from the colleges' online websites just what they are looking for from them.

Don't worry so much about the rankings. There are so many good schools in the US, and a student who is motivated will be able to get a great education and go on to excellent grad schools or jobs even if they don't go to one of the top 50. Those rankings can be skewed.

If your son won't have a counselor working with him until next January, does that mean he is not applying until fall of '08? and entering college fall of '09. If so, then the PSAT he took this year was a practice, and the one he takes next year will be the important one. Also, that would account for the lack of mail. They usually only send a ton of mail to students who will be applying to college in the coming fall (for us, that will be Fall '07).

Keep checking this website, particularly for the individual schools, and about international students--it has been extremely helpful for us!

No my child is not an international student; rather is a US Citizen as do both I and my wife.
It is just that neither I nor my wife studied here as I came to US to work on H-1 visa.

What do PSAT scores mean? A sophomore score of 42 in both writing and math, and a 51 in critical reading with a composite score of 135 means what? Does anyone know how these scores correlate to SAT or ACT.

42= 420
51=510
so this correlates to a total score of 1530/2400 on the SAT

420
420

510

1350

this is equivalent to a 1350 out of 2400 on the SAT.

or the equivalent of a 930 out of 1600 on the old SAT.

This is an old thread, and the last post on it by POIH was over five years ago.
